Each time flipturn’s played somewhere in the DMV, it’s felt like a victory, a milestone celebration for the indie rock band out of Fernandina Beach, Fla.
Fitting it was this past Sunday night for the group to stuff The Anthem to the gills with emotionally charged fans for what the bandmates said was its biggest headlining show yet.

California Guitar Trio performed live at Rams Head on Stage on April 12. Steve Satzberg was there to photograph the show.
The War and Treaty released Plus One, their fourth studio album, in February and then hit the road in support of the record! The husband-and-wife duo recently performed live at Howard Theatre in DC, and Steve Satzberg was there to photograph the show.
Bright Eyes released Five Dice, All Threes, their 11th studio album, last year, and now hit the road in support of it! The band perform live at The Anthem on Saturday, April 20.
It’s been a few years since the release of Snow Patrol’s last record, Wildness, and their last stop in Washington, DC. But on Friday, the Scots-Irish band brought a career-spanning show to The Anthem on the tail of their new record, The Forest is the Path.
The Forest is the Path, Snow Patrol’s eighth full-length album, not including compilations and singles collections. And the record may be one of their best with anthemic hooks galore, so I was really interested in seeing how these new tunes fit together in the set list.
The show was a seated affair, but as soon as the band took the stage everyone was standing and singing along to every word. Snow Patrol took the stage with the single, “Take Back The City,” from 2008’s A Hundred Million Suns with Lightbody taking the mic and moving back and forth across the stage, while both Nathan Connolly (/guitar) and Johnny McDaid (guitar/keys) rocked opposite sides of the stage, providing washes of distorted guitar.

Itzhak Perlman brought his foot-stomping, heartbeat-raising collection of klezmer music to audiences around the country with “In the Fiddler’s House,” a live presentation of his Emmy Award-winning PBS special, “Great Performances: In the Fiddler’s House.” Almost 30 years later, Perlman still left audiences dancing in the aisles with this unique and unforgettable cultural music experience.
Steve Satzberg was there to photograph the recent performance at Strathmore Music Center!

Hayes Carll and Corb Lund teamed for their Bible on the Dash Tour, which recently brought them to City Winery Philadelphia. Steve Satzberg was there to shoot the two troubadours on stage together.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of some truly amazing albums for the children of the first era of MTV. And with those 40th anniversaries come the joy of revisiting that colorful and remarkable time in music through celebratory tours.
For me, this is an exciting time as many of the artists of the Second British Invasion, given music chart celebrity by MTV, have returned to touring the USA. And this has provided a platform for some who have been away for a very long time to reclaim their music for an American audience.
Enter Belouis Some, born Neville Keighley, an excellent musician who crafted introspective dance tunes that thoughtfully examine the bonds between human beings generally and romantic partners specifically. Neville recently returned to US stages for the first time since 1988 with an initial show at City Winery Philadelphia to resource his outstanding 1985 album, Some People.
Acclaimed indie-pop duo Tennis release their highly anticipated new album, Face Down in the Garden, arriving via their own Mutually Detrimental label on Friday, April 25. Produced and recorded by the husband-and-wife duo of Patrick Riley and Alaina Moore in their Denver, Colorado home studio, the album and new single mark the final recordings from this incarnation of Tennis.
Tennis embark on a farewell tour that brings them to The Anthem on Tuesday, June 3. You can win tickets to say good-bye to Tennis with Parklife DC!
