Come float on a moment with Beth Gibbons, the enigmatic voice behind visionary trip-hop group Portishead. In 2024, Gibbons released Lives Outgrown, her debut solo studio album, via Domino Recording Company.

She’s now on tour in support of that album, and she performs at The Anthem in DC on Sunday, March 30!

As a music photographer, and a music aficionado, it was important for me to get to see Sarah Shook & The Disarmers at Songbyrd Music House for their last-ever DC show.

Everyone was in really good spirits for an energetic concert headlined by Los Angeles synthpop artist Riki recently at DC9. Riki gave a commanding performance, buoyed by the companionship of her opening acts — Delores Galore from New Orleans and Donzii from Miami — and the evening felt like a showcase for three very different but complementary acts.

Gypsy Sally’s was one of the first venues where I began photographing live music in Washington, DC. As my “career” in concert photography was just getting started, in January 2014 (and again a few months later), I took my camera to photograph River Whyless, a new band from Asheville, North Carolina. A local duo, Pretty Gritty, was opening.

Little did I know that over the next few years Gypsy Sally’s would give me the opportunity to see and photograph an incredible variety of local and national touring musicians.

Virgil and I arrived at The Anthem in DC in the waning daylight hours of a beautiful spring Friday. After securing our VIP wristbands for this sold-out show — thanks, Dream Theater! — we sashayed our way into the lounge just behind the soundboard and held court at a high-top with a dead-center stage view.

ZZ Ward was in great form recently playing the Maryland Hall in Annapolis while on tour promoting her latest album, Liberation. This album is very personal to Ward and perfectly brings her into the mix of playing blues music and sticking to her musical and familial roots.

Kim Deal is an icon of indie rock. Over a 40-year career, she’s been in some of the biggest alternative bands, including Pixies (as she emphasized, it’s not the Pixies, it’s just Pixies) and The Breeders. Last year, she finally went solo, releasing the acclaimed record Nobody Loves You More. In a recent turn at the Capitol Turnaround, she delivered a performance worthy or her lofty status in the alt-rock pantheon.
