Jason Isbell has consistently been one of the best songwriters in popular music for 20 years, going back to his tenure with the Drive-By Truckers.  On the second of three at the Warner Theatre, a room he praised highly — he recently appeared solo and acoustic, in a setting that highlighted his songcraft, warmth, intelligence, and humor.

Last week I took a short trip to Colombia but never left my little Pacific Northwest community. In fact, I’ve traveled to a number of locations around the globe as a result of Bellingham’s incredible musical diversity: a Gambian Kora virtuoso, an expert Zimbabwean marimba player, Italian manouche jazz, Australian power pop, and Canadian folk.

Bogota, Colombia-based BALTHVS, as part of the continuing BellinghamExit showcase, made its Bellingham (Washington) debut on a recent Thursday night to an enthusiastic, nearly sold-out show at the Wild Buffalo House of Music and further cemented this region’s reputation for pleasing, varied musical artistry.

I forget who I saw perform at The Birchmere at the first show I attended in the early 1990s, and it wouldn’t be for several more years before I went again. But once I did return, I was treated to musical riches beyond compare.

In the immortal words of Muddy Waters, “The blues had a baby and they named it rock ‘n’ roll.” The blues could just as easily have named that baby George Thorogood, as his recent appearance at the Warner Theatre was a celebration of greasy, groovy blues-based rock ‘n’ roll music, delivered loud and nasty.

“Who tours in the middle of February?” was the rhetorical question from Sylvaine, the opening act for Eivør’s latest North American tour. Well, the answer is Vikings! Vikings tour in February! Sylvaine hails from Norway, so it was comical to hear her discuss how cold it was. What was NOT comical was her performance at The Fillmore Silver Spring, opening for Eivør. She played a solo set that was both sweet and haunting.
