¡Viva Colombia!

DC will get the chance to indulge in the tastes and sounds of Colombia on Sunday, July 17th.

Come down to the DC (Gallaudet) Pavilion near Union Market for the International Colombian Festival. Colombian music, dancing, art and plenty of tasty food!

The festival will feature a series of bands from Colombia and a beauty pageant.

If it gets anything like Parque Lleras in Medellín, it should be a good time. If the food is anything like bandeja paisa, it should be amazing.

DC’s Mappy Hour, put on by OutdoorFest, recently got a face lift (no pun intended), from their partnership with The North Face in Georgetown.

With a new attitude and the new partnership (this will be the third Mappy Hour with The North Face) the event has grown into an even more interesting social exercise.

This month’s Mappy Hour will feature a fitness competition (people will be split into teams), including a .8 mile run to Theodore Roosevelt Island and back. Afterwards, there will be a chat led by The North Face athletes and free beer! Learn more and register here.

Parking is free, and they have also partnered with Lyft to help get you to The North Face between 6-10pm. See the code to use when you register.

The band stepped out of the darkness and whipped up a dazzling instrumental intro as the audience closed in on the stage.

After the intro by Astorian, frontwoman Alexandra Schmidt appeared and sang lushly of self-respect in a song titled “Giving Yourself Away,” from the band’s debut EP, Night Flight, which was released in April.

Pro ultimate frisbee (or ‘disc’ in the pro circuit), you say?

Why yes, it’s a thing and you should be checking it out.

Your city’s team in the American Ultimate Disc League (AUDL) is known as the DC Breeze and they play at Hotchkiss Field at Gallaudet University.

And your Breeze have qualified for the AUDL playoffs for the first time! They take on the New York Empire this Saturday, July 16th.

There are 26 AUDL teams around the country, including six in the East Division. The Breeze finished second in the East Division at 10-4, behind the Toronto Rush (12-2).

Time to discover an exciting new league and sport. Gates open 75 minutes early for food, games and music.

Music Park: Tar Queen @ Montreux Music Festival — 7/5/16

Self-proclaimed stoner rock band Tar Queen opened a free show at the Montreux Jazz Festival’s Rock Cave last week with the rolling psychedelic number “Roger Mojo.”

The song is a new single in 2016 from the quartet, hailing from Freiburg, Switzerland, and it marks an exciting evolution in the band’s sound since the release of their last album — 2013’s Continuum. I didn’t know any of this before walking into the Montreux Jazz Festival of course, but it was a terrific experience to pick up on new discoveries like Tar Queen at the renowned festival, particularly Swiss bands like these gents that deserve a wider audience.

Grapevine: ANXO Cidery & Pintxos Bar Grand Opening, 7/13/16

Cider @ ANXO

DC’s first production cidery, ANXO Cidery & Pintxos Bar, will open on Wednesday, July 13th at 5pm.

Located in Truxton Circle (300 Florida Ave. NW Washington, DC 20001) and across the street from Meats & Foods, it will feature Basque style cider and food and produce small batch quantities of its own cider.

Pintxos is a style of Basque food (in regions of Spain and France). Basque culture and food was also featured in this year’s Folklife Festival.

Author and avid hiker, Jeffrey Ryan discussed his new book, Appalachian Odyssey: A 28-Year Hike of America’s Trail, at Thos. Moser showroom (in Georgetown) on Tuesday, July 12th.

Over the course of 28 years, Ryan hiked all the segments of the Appalachian Trail and learned about setting goals, chasing dreams and achieving them. He finished hiking all sections of the trail in 2013. To a small but engaged group, he highlighted a few stories from the book and showed many photographs of his extensive time on the Appalachian Trail. Some stories were a bit unbelievable.

Come by Dodge City on this Thursday night to listen to a night of new wave tunes from yours truly, recently returned from slumming for several weeks around Europe, where I refreshed my own careless memories of some of the best music to come out of the Second British Invasion and other great stuff.

Our party is inspired by the fact that I cover many great bands in the blog here at Parklife DC, and fulfilling a niche to listen to those bands in a fantastic space like Dodge City had been lacking around town recently!

Over 4th of July weekend I had a chance to venture out and peek into a couple of the new bars that opened in the NE (Big Chief) and SE (The Brig).

I like beer gardens as a concept, so I usually make it a point to visit new ones when they open. Sipping suds outside on a cool evening or in the shade on a hot day, I can handle that.
