The Washington Performing Arts recently hosted Pink Martini at the world-renowned Kennedy Center for an evening filled with superb musicianship and vocals. Whether it was Thomas Lauderdale’s fantastic piano playing, the beautiful vocals of China Forbes, Ari Shapiro, or Jimmie Herrod, or the technical brilliance of the other members of this highly talented jazz and pop band, it was definitely a night for enjoyment for all in attendance, and a night that will be remembered for a long time to come.

The Drive-By Truckers have released a lot of excellent records, but their 2001 concept album Southern Rock Opera, which deals with the politics of their home state of Alabama, the legacy of Lynyrd Skynyrd, life on the road, and more, might be their best. It holds a special place in the hearts of the band and their fans, enough to justify the Southern Rock Opera Revisited Tour, which recently rolled into the Warner Theatre in DC.

In August, hip hop artist Larry June released a new album, Doing It for Me, via The Freeminded. He embarked on a tour in support of the record with a recent date at the Howard Theatre.

Chris Castillo was there to photograph the show!

In September, FIDLAR officially released their fourth studio album, Surviving the Dream, ending the five-year hiatus since the band’s last full-length record.

The Los Angeles punk rockers are on a tour in support of the record, and they recently performed a show at the 9:30 Club in DC! Micael Cerball was there to capture the action in photos.

The The returned to American shores for the first time since 2018 and in their most expansive tour since 1999. Moreover, it was frontman Matt Johnson’s first DC-area performance since 1993, as best I can reckon.

And so The The’s recent performance at The Anthem in DC afforded me the first time ever to see Matt live, and frankly I was gobsmacked by the beauty and the thoughtfulness of the performance.

Live Review: Bonny Light Horseman @ Wild Buffalo House of Music (Bellingham, WA) — 10/13/24

Only one show remained on the final night of the 2024 Bellingham Exit Music & Arts Festival: Bonny Light Horseman at the Wild Buffalo House of Music. To say the trio — Anaïs Mitchell (Hadestown), Eric D. Johnson (Fruit Bats, The Shins), and Josh Kaufman (The National, Hiss Golden Messenger, Josh Ritter) — brought the festival to a wonderfully satisfying close would be a vast understatement.

The band’s set at the wildly festooned Wild Buffalo concert space reflected exactly what Bellingham Exit strove to achieve: a sold-out, enthusiastic audience sharing love of live music with a band that performs with abandon, humor, and just enough quirkiness to keep the proceedings aligned with Bellingham’s uniqueness.

At Snallygaster, attendees may be all about the beers, but they still soak up some great music while in attendance. And Snallygaster 2024 set the bar high when it came to bands with two DC legendary acts and two young acts providing entertainment at both ends of the festival.

On the main stage, go-go icons Trouble Funk led the bill against the backdrop of the Capitol Building — what a scene! Earlier in the day, reggae punks The Pietasters set a rowdy tone appropriate for beer drinking. And on the secondary stage, power pop quintet Dim Wizard were the first full band of the day, soon to be followed by Massie, a power pop trio.

The music, the beer, and the lovely weather made for a remarkably pleasant day.

Live Review: Delicate Steve @ Songbyrd Music House — 10/12/24

So many admirable musicians are impressing with the electric guitar these days, but few seem to wield it with the curative power and determination of Steve Marion.

The New Jersey native’s credited on a long list of notable records dating back to the early 2010s, and that includes collaborations with the likes of Paul Simon and playing with The Black Keys. But he’s best known these days by his studio and stage moniker, Delicate Steve, and as this transfixing character he’s proving himself to be rising star of a guitarist.

Last week I was introduced to some new music. It isn’t often that I get to shoot a show almost immediately after learning of the artist. But that’s what happened when Alfie Templeman headlined The Atlantis. What made the evening even better was discovering another fun band in the opener, Your Neighbors.

On a brisk Tuesday night, Stevie Wonder brought a warmth that radiated across Baltimore, and he did it with some very special friends. “We can fix our nation’s broken heart” goes Stevie Wonder’s latest single of the same name. That was certainly one of the themes at Baltimore’s CFG Bank Arena as the living legend performed for nearly three hours, hitting every song fans had been waiting to hear.

For his first tour in 10 years, Stevie Wonder’s Sing Your Song! As We Fix Our Nation’s Broken Heart Tour the musical icon is stopping in 11 towns across America. And if there was anyone who could bring that much needed sunshine to the Nation, it’s Stevie Wonder.
