I don’t know much, but the best way to spend a Saturday night is at a live show. That’s the honest truth. And this show was one I was excited for, especifically for the opener Missio. I’ve seen them once before, and absolutely became obsessed with them a few years ago. Playing all my favorites, including “Everybody Gets High,” I bounced around the photo pit, singing along to every song while taking photos and then dancing through the rest of their set. With a kind of techno rock feel, they recently got the audience hyped up and put in a trance, ready to go for the other two bands of the night, Slothrust and of course, the main headliner Badflower, at The Fillmore Silver Spring.

Norwegian sextet Kaizers Orchestra’s infectious and theatrical alternative-rock transcends language barriers. The group is a sell-out show commodity in Scandinavia, but has also garnered a devoted audience in Europe and beyond.

The band is now knocking on the doors of the USA with a select run of east coast dates, including the Lincoln Theatre in DC on Tuesday, Oct. 8, for their first American tour.

Two of indie rock’s most successful bands can certainly grab attention with the announcement of a co-headlining tour. But as it turns out, the result is as much a festival traveling from city to city as it is a chance to witness these groups in action.

The National and The War on Drugs shared news early this year of a joint mission — dubbed the Zen Diagram Tour — and the high-profile cooperation kicked off this month by filling large auditoriums in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.

Merriweather Post Pavilion was the third stop on the roadshow, and these two influential bands packed the expansive Columbia venue the night of Sept. 16 as ticketholders enjoyed almost five hours of music.

Modeled after the hugely successful Key West Songwriters Festival, the largest festival of its kind in the world, the Annapolis Songwriters Festival brought our love for music to the Chesapeake Bay for its 2024 edition!

Like Key West, Annapolis has its own world-renowned watering holes and intimate theater settings, making Maryland’s historic capital on the bay the perfect location for live music enthusiasts to get acquainted with the faces, voices, and stories behind the songs.

Steve Satzberg recently shot many performances around 2024 Annapolis Songwriters Festival for Parklife DC.

Album anniversary tours are proliferating in these post-pandemic times, and though the merits of each can be debated, rolling from city to city to celebrate a specific record affords a band the chance to breathe new life into its songs and remind how compelling they were to begin with.

DeVotchka formed in the late 1990s in Denver as a cabaret group to back burlesque shows. Around the turn of the century, the band solidified its lineup and began recording its own material shaped by a spectrum of influences, from Mexican folk to Eastern European immigrant dance.

But with the 2004 release of its fourth album, How It Ends, the quartet created a masterpiece, blending styles from all over the world into its own rich and stirring sound. DeVotchka’s been out on the road to end the summer and to mark 20 years since the initial release of How It Ends, playing the pivotal album almost in its entirety. The night of Sept. 14, the band found itself on stage, facing an exuberant audience at Black Cat in Washington DC.

Weezer fired on all thrusters in their recent two-night visit to The Anthem in DC, where they celebrated their landmark self-titled debut album (known as the “Blue Album”) in a high-concept show with strong production values and more importantly wonderfully punchy songs.

Live Review: Jolie Holland @ Jammin’ Java — 9/17/24

Jolie Holland has a unique vision that pushes the boundaries of Americana. It draws on what Greil Marcus called “the old weird America,” a strange land filled with ghosts that continues to haunt the present. Her songwriting is literary, influenced by poets like WB Yeats, and it’s married to a distinctive sound that includes elements of jazz and the avant-garde.

All of these things that make her such a special artist were on full display in her recent performance at Jammin’ Java.

For more than 20 years, Annie Clark has kept her personal life at a distance from her success on the stage, in the studio and on the big screen as the musical force known worldwide as St. Vincent.

But with her seventh and latest studio album, All Born Screaming, the talented vocalist and multi-instrumentalist has assembled what she believes to be her most flourishing and intimate collection of songs to date. It’s also Clark’s first self-produced record, but it features an assortment of high-profile contributions, including the likes of Dave Grohl and Cate Le Bon.

Those songs rang true in St. Vincent’s recent performance at The Anthem in DC.
