A few years ago, Midge Ure told us at Parklife DC how his cover of “The Man Who Sold the World” by David Bowie gained new prominence as a viral stream.

Japanese video game creator Hideo Kojima visited Midge Ure at a show and expressed his interest in using the song as the theme for Metal Gear Solid — and a few years later, the proposal became reality. “The entire opening sequence of this final installment of a five-game series was based on ‘The Man Who Sold The World.’ It tapped into an entirely different audience,” Midge told Parklife.

It was thrilling then to see the cover resurface in Midge Ure’s setlist for his recent performance at Rams Head on Stage, which our contributor Steve Satzberg photographed.

The Hamilton Live played host to the Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young tribute band, Our House, for a two night run last weekend. Tribute bands, generally speaking, can be a lot of fun. Our House was no exception but with a bit of a difference. Every member of the band has a tie to David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash, and/or Neil Young. That’s a pretty elite group of musicians so you know they are going to do justice and pay homage to the music. The show is masterfully performed and split into two sets.

Few entertainers can use instruments to fascinating and hilarious effect, but Fred Armisen has an acute and relatable sense of humor that makes him one of the most beloved comedians in all the land.

But he’s also a longtime musician and an educated, discerning listener. Both his knowledge of bands and his connections in the industry can be described as far-reaching.

Honest Lee Soul performed to a packed house recently at Rams Head On Stage in Annapolis, Maryland. The band was formed in Annapolis and takes pride in being part of their local scene while also continually stretching their geographical and musical boundaries.

The core band features five members and they added two background singers to amp up the special occasion. Rams Head On Stage is an intimate space designed as a listening room, but that didn’t stop Honest Lee Soul from bringing high energy and a big sound to the stage.

While he was initially marketed as a country artist, Lyle Lovett’s ambitions proved too broad to be contained within that tent. His songwriting draws on influences, like Randy Newman, from far beyond that world, and, over his long career, he’s expanded to a big band sound. Everything he’s done reflects great intelligence and excellent taste, which has allowed to him cross over to mainstream success. In his recent appearance at Wolf Trap, backed by his large band, Lovett demonstrated why he’s grown and maintained his popularity for all these years.

Chuck Mead plays country music with rock n’ roll swagger — and volume. In a recent appearance with his band, the Stalwarts, at Jammin’ Java, he treated the audience to a concentrated dose of rollicking, hardcore honkytonk, playing songs from his time with BR549, material from his solo career, and some beloved covers.

In a recent appearance at Denver Colorado’s Botanic Gardens, Arlo Parks, channeling joy and positive energy, performed to an adoring and animated crowd. On the last date of her current tour (and a day before her birthday), the English-born singer sang songs from her 2021 debut, Collapsed in Sunbeams, and her 2023 release, My Soft Machine. Although thunderstorms had threatened throughout the day, the rain held off and the show proceeded as planned, albeit with an earlier start time.
