Music Park: Mountain Man @ Sixth & I — 10/22/18

Six years between tours and eight between albums seems like a long time, but for the North Carolina-based Mountain Man, it certainly doesn’t sound like years apart on their second full-length LP, Magic Ship (Nonesuch / Bella Union). Part of that reason is that recipe of rhythm and harmony that Amelia Meath, Alexandra Sauser-Monnig, and Molly Sarlé each add to the pot. Part traditional Appalachian folk songs and part post-modern Americana, the music created by this trio was both pleasant and off-center, an often transcendent stew that was totally engrossing at Sixth & I on Monday.

Music Park: Glorietta @ Rock and Roll Hotel — 10/19/18

Rock music history is littered with supergroups and friend records (not exactly bands, but brief collectives). Glorietta is kind of the former, more the latter; supergroup implies major fame for all or some of the members, and as much as I think they all deserve nationwide recognition, their achievements are all strongly in the indie musicverse. The talents behind those achievements were clearly on display at the Rock and Roll Hotel recently.

I’d never seen Gypsy Sally’s so packed. I counted no less than four members of the media who turned to cover Sarah Borges and fellow roots rockers the Bottle Rockets recently. We were well rewarded, because Sarah can flat out rock.

Tyler Childers recently released his early recordings Live on Red Barn Radio I & II on vinyl and CD with a flashy new cover. Having been on tour for just a slice short of forever (Tyler sang a tune called “Ever Lovin’ Hand” about, well, I’ll call it monogamy and the loneliness of touring two-thirds of the year), this tour was not exactly for the new record, but a continuation of the heavy lifting he and the boys have been muscling through, as they did at The 8×10 in Baltimore on Oct. 16.
