Touring as Del & Dawg, Del McCoury and David Grisman packed the house at The Birchmere Friday night. As well they should — these men are legends. Del, who played with Bill Monroe in the Bluegrass Boys, is one of the foremost traditional bluegrass musicians in the world. The original Americana radio format on KCSN in Northride in 1984 included Dawg’s eponymous music style, and he collaborated extensively with Jerry Garcia.

There’s Friday night music and Saturday night. Friday nights, I’m exhausted from a week at work. I need something low-key, not too aggressive. I got that last Friday with Rosanne Cash, who put on a wonderful evening of songs and stories. Saturday nights I can get rowdy, and Lara Hope & the Ark-Tones brought the party to Villain & Saint in Bethesda.

In what has become an annual tradition, the Tedeschi Trucks Band recently spent two February weekends in DC for its fifth annual Warner Theatre residency. This year’s residency included four performances, each of which sold out the 1,847-seat venue. I was lucky to get a ticket and a photo pass for the final performance.

Local roots music artist Lauren Calve opened for Old 97’s frontman Rhett Miller recently at City Winery DC. Accompanied by John Figueroa on the electric guitar, Lauren strummed out tunes inspired by her life and historical sources on her acoustic guitar, beginning with “Polly.” Inspired by the negative portrayal of a woman in a traditional folk recording, Lauren wanted to present Polly’s side of the story.
