Joachim Cooder opened for his father, Ry, at The Birchmere on Monday, the second of two tour dates at the venue. Joachim recently released his debut EP as a solo performer, Fuchsia Machu Picchu, but at only 39 years old, he has nearly 25 years of experience as a professional. He’s played drums in his father’s band since his teens, and worked with his dad his to score a Wim Wenders film.

Celebrating the release of their new record, Kindness, A Rebel (Roll Call Records), the band performed on a warm summer evening Friday to a relaxed, picnicking crowd at Grist Mill Park near George Washington’s sprawling country estate, Mt. Vernon.

By the time River Whyless took the stage at the Herndon Festival on Saturday, not a drop had fallen all day — and both band and audience were hopeful that it would stay that way for at least one more 45-minute set. The threat of storms made the day a risky proposition, but the rain, thankfully, held off.

The THE BAND Band, a critically acclaimed tribute band of The Band, turned in a solid performance at DC’s City Winery on Saturday, performing many of the seminal hits of The Band’s legendary catalog, including “Ophelia,” “Up On Cripple Creek,” “Stage Fright,” “It Makes No Difference,” “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” and this photographer’s personal favorite, “The Weight.” The setlist also included a couple of Bob Dylan tunes, done in recognition of The Band’s time as Dylan’s backing band.
