When musicians themselves hold a place and event so close to their hearts that it becomes sacred, the experience for fans is that much more lasting and remarkable.

The Newport Folk Festival, long considered one of the country’s most influential gatherings of songwriters, artists, and performers, proved to be that and so much more this year — three full days of celebrating music as a communal power and a change agent at a time when the nation feels fragmented by political turmoil and the lingering struggles of the pandemic.

Live Review: Langhorne Slim w/ Riddy Arman @ The Birchmere — 3/22/22

I feel a certain kinship with soulful folk-Americana troubadour Langhorne Slim. We’re a couple of Jewish kids who were born just two days apart, and we grew up in neighboring states; he named himself for the suburb of Philadelphia he hails from, while I grew up just outside of Akron, Ohio. We love a lot of the same stuff: Dylan, Waits, Cat Stevens, Woody Guthrie, Captain Beefheart, Will Oldham, and Uncle Tupelo. 

Langhorne is a high-energy performer, someone who is more than dynamic enough to capture an audience when he’s out there on his own with just an acoustic guitar. There’s a lot of motion in his performance and you couldn’t miss it at The Birchmere in his recent date there: He moved around the stage, he came out from behind the mic, he went into the crowd. Slim had a lot of energy, and I could relate to that!

An Intimate Evening with Langhorne Slim on “The Lost at Last Tour”

Langhorne Slim gave a very intimate solo performance at The Birchmere in Alexandria on Wednesday. Rather than relying on a prepared set list for the performance, Langhorne (whose real name is Sean Scolnick) selected songs on fly and shared nostalgic stories with the audience about his time growing up Southeastern Pennsylvania, his family, recruiting bandmates, and all the influences along the way that informed his music.

It seems Langhorne Slim is always on tour, but maybe that’s because he always has something to say! The singer-songwriter recently released Lost at Last Vol. 1, his sixth and latest album, via Dualtone Records. Now, he’s performing at The Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia, on Wednesday, March 28.
