If you’ve ever seen an NPR Tiny Desk Concert, you owe a debt to Laura Gibson. In 2008, she performed on the initial episode of the series. NPR music critics Stephen Thompson and Bob Boilen had attended one of her shows, and were disappointed that they couldn’t hear her over the crowd. Bob decided to have Laura perform at his desk, and the Tiny Desk Concert was born.

Esperanza Spalding released 12 Little Spells, her seventh studio album, via Concord Records in October. She appears at the Lincoln Theatre on Saturday, Dec. 1 for the accompanying 12 Little Spells Tour.

Blitzen Trapper, the five piece from Portland, Oregon, has been going strong for well over 15 years now, but it’s their 2008 album, Furr, where most fans got their start with its experimental Americana and vivid lyrical imagery. Blizten Trapper celebrated the 10th anniversary of that album at Rock and Roll Hotel on Friday.

In addition to releasing his own solo albums, beginning with Duet for Guitars in 1999, M. hangs out with Zooey Deschanel in She & Him and joins up with folk-rock supergroup Monsters of Folk.
