Our blogger Ari Strauss caught NO BS! Brass Band of Richmond, Virginia, earlier this year. His reaction: “Imagine legendary drummer and band leader Buddy Rich magically had a love child with funk icon George Clinton. The product would be NO BS! Brass Band.”

Sounds like a good show for the long Thanksgiving weekend, doesn’t it? We’re in luck! NO BS! Brass Band perform at the Black Cat on Saturday, Nov. 24.

Founders Reggie Pace (trombone) and Lance Koehler (drums) cast the 11-piece band, in which nearly every member has had conservatory training, holding various degrees in music. As they explain on the band’s website, “In putting together the compositions and arrangements, the ‘b.s.’ has been stripped to give the audience something solid, unique, organic, real, and powerful.” They have the look of New Orleans with the raw sound all their own.

In addition to Reggie and Lance, NO BS! Brass Band includes Bryan Hooten, John Hulley, Reggie Chapman, and Dillard Watton on trombone; Sam Koff, Marcus Tenney, Taylor Barnett, and Rob Quallich on trumpet; David Hood on saxaphone; and Stefan Demetriadis on tuba.

Watch NO BS! Brass Band perform “3AM Bounce” live at the 2018 Telluride Jazz Festival in Colorado on YouTube:

Reggie and Lance formed NO BS! Brass Band in 2006, and the band has released several albums, most recently Brass Knuckles in 2015. With new singles like “3AM Bounce” above, NO BS! Brass Band may be gearing up for another album soon! Check them out live at Black Cat.
