Superorganism is not any unconventional science project from middle school, but a experimental band that makes really good music. The band showed off what they can do at 9:30 Club recently on their last night of their U.S. tour.

Superorganism is a big group of artists. With seven musicians — Orono (lead singer); Tucan (drummer); Harry (guitar); Emily (synths);  B, Ruby, and Soul (backing singers); and Robert Strange on visuals. Moon-shaped microphones and arcade-like graphics in the background set the mood for the show.

And the show was a sparkly, shiny, and colorful experience from the very start of the first few songs of their set. The visuals took you on a psychedelic ride while the music sent you on a bubblegum trip. Orono pumped the crowd up while B, Ruby, and Soul did their part as hype people for Orono.

Throughout the show, the graphics illuminated the stage according to the mood of each song. It helped visualize what to imagine for each song like “The Prawn Song,” “Nai’s March,” and “Night Time.” You would either go on a journey into the mythical sea or fly over houses like in Nyan-cat fashion.

The banter was especially on point. Orono hinted at a random snippet of their second album in the middle of the show. Toward the end of the show, she continued that the band was about to play their “last song,” leave the stage, and possibly not come back. But in good spirits, they surely did come back for their encore of “Something for Your M.I.N.D.” Definitely check to see if Superorganism will play at festival near you here.
