A booty-shaking self-help seminar: The Lizzo Experience.
At 9:30 Club on May 20, Lizzo sauntered on stage alone to “Cuz I love you” with nothing but her powerful voice proving the screaming masses had every reason for their excitement.
She then invited her big grrrls (Grace, Courtney, Levi, and Shirlene) on stage to properly worship her. The squad of expressive dancers with “don’t touch” scrawled across the butt cheeks of their shorts spent the night with sharp choreography: grooving, shaking, jumping, and generally showing off their fabulosity.
In the hands of someone less warm and inviting, Lizzo’s script of self love and positivity could seem contrite or gimmicky, but one look in her eyes and the sincerity of her words are confirmed. She has struggled, she is 100 percent “that bitch” and she is HERE. There was a feeling that she would be friends with every one of the diverse audience members, if she could.

The songs themselves are a mature mix of genres with a wide mass appeal, the perfect setting for her message. Everyone spent the night dancing, but they went home remembering the love in the air and embracing it all.
