Silversun Pickups released Widow’s Weeds, the band’s fifth studio album, over the summer via their own New Machine Recordings. In support of the record, the indie rockers toured through Rams Head Live recently, and Katherine Gaines shot the show!
For the new album, the band enlisted Butch Vig (Nirvana, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth) to produce. Said lead singer Brian Aubert about Widow’s Weeds: “This was the first album where we were open. We were exposed. I see how that can be scary to people, but for us we really thrived on that.”

Lead singer Brian Aubert, bassist Nikki Monninger, drummer Christopher Guanlao, and keyboardist Joe Lester continue to experiment with electronics after launching the band on the strength of their guitars. Cure-like keyboards hold their own against riffs on “Neon Wound,” which opened the show at Rams Head Live on Dec. 6, and the spring-loaded “It Doesn’t Matter Why,” which immediately followed.
During the course of the show, Silversun Pickups also performed several songs each from the band’s previous albums — Carnavas (2006), Swoon (2009), Neck of the Woods (2012), and Better Nature (2015). Toward the end of the main set, the quartet also threw in “Kissing Families,” a number from their debut EP, Pikul (2005)
Silversun Pickups play 9:30 Club in DC on Sunday, March 8.
