DMV native Kali Uchis made a DC stop on her sold-out Red Moon In Venus Tour not long ago, and she embraced her “hometown” with a phenomenal show at The Anthem.

With over 30 million monthly listeners on Spotify, Kali has risen to fame rapidly over the past few years. Her career started in 2012 when a mixtape of hers gained the attention of big names in the music industry. Kali’s soulful mix of R&B, reggaeton, hip-hop, and Latin pop, maintains her presence and popularity in the industry. In 2018, Kali released her first album, Isolation, to wide acclaim from listeners. Kali gradually caught the attention of artists such as Snoop Dogg, Gorillaz, Tyler, the Creator, and Daniel Caesar, with whom she’s since created music and continued to grow in influence.

Kali Uchis returned to The Anthem in DC on May 5 for a concert that drew heavily from her new album, Red Moon In Venus while also nodding to her debut, Isolation (2018), and her sophomore record Sin Miedo (2020). In terms of Kali’s performance, it was choreographed and rehearsed to a tee — and the practice definitely paid off. Between her six complementary background dancers, flawless lighting, seamless stage design, and her own dance steps, the show was perfectly executed and equally entertaining.

Kali’s voice is unhesitatingly incredible. She hits the high notes just as easily as the low, and melts her lyrics into her rhythm, in a beautiful and captivating manner. One song in which she immaculately demonstrated her vocal skills was “Loner,” recorded for her first EP, Por Vida, in 2015. And Kali of course was phenomenal in each song she performed.

Let’s celebrate Kali Uchis as a child of the DMV! Although she is now a global Latin superstar, she was born locally in Alexandria, Virginia, in 1994.
