On May 28, Metallica will storm into Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland, bringing their highly anticipated M72 Tour, an ambitious and innovative production that promises a spectacular, immersive experience.
In a technical preview on Tuesday, tour Coordinator Jon-Michael Marino described the unprecedented scale of this tour’s logistics, highlighting a unique “in-the-round” stadium design, previously reserved mostly for arena shows. The production centers around eight towering structures, each 90-feet tall and weighing approximately 14 tons, fitted with state-of-the-art LED screens to ensure every attendee, from front-row fans to those seated at the stadium’s highest levels, feels intimately connected to the band.
“This is the largest touring audio system ever assembled,” Marino explained. The system supports nearly 200 audio inputs, creating multiple distinct audio zones, ensuring clear, consistent sound throughout the stadium. To handle the intense setup, the crew includes roughly 350 members, transported by a fleet of 87 semi-trucks leapfrogging between cities, allowing simultaneous staging and teardown processes.
Northwest Stadium’s Chief Programming Officer Sean Saadeh emphasized the venue’s role in bringing world-class artists like Metallica, Beyoncé, and Post Malone to the DC area. “Our goal is delivering unforgettable experiences,” Saadeh said. “Despite logistical challenges like transportation and parking costs, we’ve created an environment that prioritizes intimacy and fan satisfaction.”
Metallica’s Marino promised the night will offer a balanced setlist, mixing beloved classics, newer tracks from their latest album “72 Seasons,” and rare fan favorites. Fans should also expect surprises, including Metallica’s iconic inflatable beach balls raining down from the towers, adding an extra layer of excitement to the memorable evening.
