Singer-songwriter Cindy Alexander is touring the United States this summer with a special stop in DC metro in partnership with the Kay Yow Cancer Fund. Cindy will play a special dinnertime show at La Mexicana (16143 Shady Grove Rd., Gaithersburg, Maryland) on Thursday, May 18.
Cindy released Deep Waters, her eighth studio album, last summer via Blue Élan Records. But Cindy is more motivated for this tour as a breast cancer survivor herself. As an ambassador to BreastCancer.org, Cindy wants to promote early detection of breast cancer and fight the disease, so she is donating all proceeds from her tour to the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which has previously raised more than $5.2 million for cancer research.
That said, Deep Waters is a passionate album dedicated to all forms of love. Cindy wrote the title track, a song about giving yourself over completely to another person, with writer and producer Colin Devlin, who is also half of Irish duo The Devlins. Guitar World hailed Deep Waters as “an insightful collection that exposes Alexander as a fearlessly skilled songwriter, singer and artist in every sense of the word.”

On the Play It Forward Tour, Cindy will play her first show at La Mexicana as she heads toward a performance at the Kay Yow Cancer Fund Gala on Sept. 3 in Raleigh, North Carolina. For this tour, the folk rocker also partnered with RoadNation, a platform that allows fans to bid on a city and thereby direct the artist to a performance there. Through RoadNation, bidders can gain “Roadie” or “VIP” status and score exclusive tour merch and music and videos as they help fund the costs of the tour.
“I was given a gift: Music. And I want to Play It Forward — play to connect, to inspire, to heal, and to cure,” said Cindy in a press release. “This summer I will be three years’ cancer-free. Through my work as an advocate for breast cancer awareness, I came across the Kay Yow Cancer Fund, which has already donated more than 5.38 million dollars to research, and towards trials that are desperately needed for those living with metastatic disease. And they do this with only seven employees, many of which I met last month in Raleigh. The proceeds of my tour this year go directly to their cause, which is my cause and my passion: ending cancer.”
Cindy will perform acoustically with Paul Trudeau (on loan from Billy Idol). Seats are limited! For tickets and info, email Rona at fitzgeraldrona@gmail.com.

Cindy Alexander is a brilliant singer/songwriter whose music I was introduced to well over ten years ago by a friend who sent me her latest CD at the time – Smash. I loved every song on it and I was instantly a fan. I’ve even flown out several times to California from N.Y. to see full band shows, which were fantastic. Deep Waters has become my favorite album, followed by Curve, the CD that preceded it, which follows her journey through cancer and recovery, but is also immensely listenable and even fun – see Good Time Sally. I think Anesthesia is my favorite cut though! Go see her if you can. You won’t regret it. 🙂
