Lake Street Dive kicked off the Fall swing of its 2022 tour with a sold-out show at DC’s The Anthem for a recent date coinciding with the release of its new six-track EP of covers titled, Fun Machine, The Sequel. The EP is the band’s second project of covers and its first album release through Fantasy Records.

“Imagine you walk into your favorite local dive bar, and Lake Street Dive is on stage, doing our regular weekly gig for $5 a head,” the band collectively described in a press release announcing Fun Machine: The Sequel. “These are the songs we’d be covering there and how we’d be playing them. Some deep cuts, some sentimental favorites and some (hopefully) epic crowd pleasers.”

Lake Street Dive is Rachael Price (lead vocals), Bridget Kearney (bass, background vocals), Mike Calabrese (drums, background vocals), Akie Bermise (keys and vocals), and touring guitarist, James Cornelison.

It is no surprise that several tracks from Fun Machine: The Sequel made their way into The Anthem setlist on Sept. 9. After opening the show with “Know That I Know,” “Hypotheticals,” and “Hush Money” (all from the 2021 album, Obviously) the band delighted the crowd with its interpretation of “Automatic” by The Pointer Sisters.

Later in the show, Rachael performed a stunningly beautiful version of “So Far Away” by Carol King with a simple acoustic guitar accompaniment, courtesy of James. In her introduction to the song, Rachael shared with the crowd that Carol King is one of her biggest heroes and that she could not overstate the impact that Carol’s influence caused her to see a career in music.

So Far Away lead into a three-song mini acoustic set of “Stop Your Crying,” “Neighbor Song,” and a slow, soulful version of The Jackson Five’s “I Want You Back,” which the band performed while tightly circled around an omnidirectional microphone.

Akie delighted the crowd with his interpretation of Shania Twain’s signature 90’s hit, “You’re Still the One,” and Rachael took lead on two additional covers, Bonnie Rait’s “Nick of Time” and “Linger” by the Cranberries.

R&B/soul singer Allen Stone opened the evening with an oversized personality and his own brand of high energy soul. Toward the end of of Lake Street Dive’s set, Allen joined them on stage to sing “I’m a Good Kisser” with Rachael.

Though the show was a little late getting started, Lake Street Dive didn’t hold anything back, giving fans a 22-song setlist with two encores.
