The Global Citizen Earth Day unites two movements to address two great challenges: Ending Extreme Poverty by 2030 and Tackling Climate Change

No Doubt, Usher, Fall Out Boy, Mary J. Blige, Train and My Morning Jacket will all be playing for free near the Washington Monument this coming Saturday, April 18.

‘Marking the 45th anniversary of Earth Day, Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day comes during a pivotal time to protect the planet and ensure that world leaders address key issues facing the next generation. Timed to coincide with the spring meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund, Global Citizen 2015 Earth Day will bring together global policymakers, finance ministers, environment and development NGOs, industry executives and high-profile artists.

Together, these world leaders will work to educate and inspire citizens to take immediate action to end extreme poverty and address climate change. The event is part of a widespread effort to mobilize global citizens in the climate and environmental movement, and the poverty and development movement to drive bold commitments from governments, businesses and individuals.’

There are three access points for the event:

Sports Park: Capitals Regular Season Report Card and Playoff Preview

Caps Report Card

Weekly Record: 1-1 (2 pts)
Final Regular Season Record: 45-26-11 (101 pts)
Clinched #2 seed in Metropolitan Division

2015 Regular Season Report Card: B

As Major League Baseball finishes its first full week, the Capitals gear up for their first round playoff match-up against the #3 New York Islanders. Yes, we still have some hockey left. Game time is 7:00pm this Wednesday, April 15. Let’s do this!

The Capitals and Islanders split the regular season series 2-2. However the Caps did get 6 points to the Islanders 4, because both their losses were in OT.

After missing the playoffs last year, the Capitals last played the Islanders in the playoffs in 1992-93, which they lost. Not much playoff history between these two teams.

The Caps finished the season strong, going 9-5-1 in their last 15, and hope to keep the momentum alive into what will likely turn into a 6 or 7 game battle with the Islanders.

Alex Ovechkin led the NHL with 52 goals. He is also now the Caps career leader in goals scored. Brandon Holtby (41-20-10) was one of the elite goalies this season, a large reason why the Caps managed to qualify for the playoffs.

Let’s go Caps!

Excursion: Happy Hour Brewery Hike

Hellbender Brewing Company
Hellbender Brewing Company

It’s Thursday, your workday is almost over, you’re bored with the normal happy hour spots, and you want to get some exercise but don’t feel like going to the gym.

Consider something completely different.

Why not check out some of your local breweries on foot?

Skip the car and the bikes. Strap on your walking shoes and visit Hellbender, 3 Stars and Denizens all in a few hours.

Since DC breweries can now sell full pints and beer flights in the evenings (expanding from the traditional growler hours they operated on the weekends), many have opened their doors for a few hours on Thursday and Friday evenings.

Most are located in the Northeast quadrant, and are not easily accessible without a car. Easy fix. Walk. Besides, drinking and driving is never a good idea…

Here is one hike you can consider, completed successfully on April 9, 2015.

What: Happy Hour Brewery Hike
Days to try: Thursday or Friday evening
Breweries to visit: 3
Distance: 4.1 miles
Time walking: 1 hour 30 minutes

Itinerary:
Start: Fort Totten Metro (between 5:00 and 6:00pm)
1st Brewery: Hellbender Brewing Company (Hours: TH/FRI 4:00-8:00pm)
2nd Brewery: 3 Stars Brewing Company (Hours: TH/FRI 4:00-8:00pm)

Caps Report Card

Weekly Record: 3-1 (7 pts)

Overall: 44-25-11 (99 pts)
Clinched playoff berth!

The Caps are in the playoffs! The Caps are in the playoffs!

In other news, Alex Ovechkin scored his 50th goal. This marks the sixth time in his career he has reached this milestone. And he’s only the sixth player in NHL history to do this. Not bad.

Then, on Thursday, he scored two more goals to become the Capitals all-time franchise leader in goals scored with 472. Pretty good.

During the week the Capitals moved into 2nd place in the Metropolitan division for a brief drop of the puck. It didn’t last as the Caps fell to the pesky Senators, who would not bow out of the playoff race gracefully, in a shoot-out. The Caps made a furious three goal really to send the game into overtime and get a point for their efforts. Nice.

Now after beating the Red Wings 2-1 on Sunday, they move back into 2nd place and clinched a playoff spot. Excellent.

Two games left to decide who they play in the 1st round.

Today you can celebrate by enjoying the Washington Nationals’ Opening Day.

Food Park: International Carrot Day @ One Eight Distilling, 4/4/15

Good news if you love carrots. They have a day of their own — International Carrot Day on Saturday, April 4.

And better news if you like carrot cake and gin, as Karat Cakery and One Eight Distilling (1135 Okei St. NE, DC) are teaming up to celebrate.

The press release from Karat Cakery says:

Let us count the ways we love carrots because on Saturday, April 4, carrots will make a delicious appearance at One Eight Distilling thanks to local food truck Karat Cakery.

Carrot lovers can enjoy both sweet and savory carrot treats from Karat Cakery’s food truck, including carrot cupcakes and surprise savory carrot dishes and of course spirits from One Eight Distilling to wash it all down.

The spirits portion of this carrot celebration will be located in the Tasting Room at One Eight Distilling (1135 Okie Street, NE). One Eight will host tours and tastings of its latest spirits on Saturday from 1pm to 4pm every half-hour, first-come, first-served. Guests must be 21+ with valid I.D. in order to participate. Admission is free, and advance registration is NOT required and there will be free on-street parking.

Guests can show their love for carrots by participating in Karat Cakery’s challenges like the “place your order using your best bunny imitation” and rounds of imaginary hoola hoop while holding Mr. Carrot. “We are thrilled to bring our carrot love to One Eight Distilling on International Carrot Day,” said Robert Hogans. “Carrots are the perfect ingredient for a fantastic day of fun, food and drink.”

The undisputed star of International Carrot Day and the centerpiece of Karat Cakery’s lineup are the carrot cupcakes, which are based on our Grandma Hogans’ family recipe. This recipe has been fashioned not only into breathtaking cupcakes, but also into irresistible carrot cakes and loaves available via Washington, DC’s only dedicated carrot cake food truck — Karat Cakery’s Goldie.

“This Saturday’s partnership with Karat Cakery is particularly special because it’s International Carrot Day,” said Jared Earley at One Eight Distilling. Yes, you can have your carrot cake and eat it too!

Caps Report Card

Weekly Record: 2-1 (4 pts)

Overall: 41-25-10 (92 pts)
+6 pt advantage for playoff spot

The Capitals needed that overtime win against the Devils last Thursday. After conceding a heartbreaking goal that tied the game with 30 seconds remaining, the Caps got a quick OT goal and salvaged the two points.

After a huge letdown against Nashville at home on Saturday, the Capitals went into New York and skated away with a 5-2 victory over the 1st place Rangers. Alex Ovechkin scored two more goals to increase his lead over 2nd place by nine goals (49).

Thankfully the Ottawa Senators turned cold this past week, losing 3 straight, largely due to an injury to their goalie. The Caps have some breathing room in the playoff hunt.

Only six games remain. Let’s go Caps!
