Reviewing a concert normally involves considering a number of measures — the virtuosity of the musicians, the songs performed, the sound’s mix and balance, the venue itself, or even the lighting. Arguably though, there is really only one measure that matters: how it made you feel.

By that standard, I’m fairly certain that 99.99% of the audience felt really, really good after the Skydiggers’ recent performance at Vancouver’s dazzling art deco venue, the Hollywood Theatre.

Memphis is one of the most important cities in American music, a place where the blues and country and R&B met and gave birth to rock n’ roll in the ’50s. And it’s still a hub of great music today: Witness Lucero, a fantastic rock band that straddles alt-country and heartland rock, and represents its home city with great pride.

In a recent show, their first time at The Birchmere, the Ben Nichols-fronted band played their anthemic songs to an audience that couldn’t get enough.

Marty Stuart is a living legend. The country crooner and his band, His Fabulous Superlatives, travel to the DC area regularly for performances, often selling out The Birchmere or Wolf Trap.

Not too long ago, Marty Stuart and His Fabulous Superlatives packed NPR headquarters for an NPR Tiny Desk Concert. I had the sincere pleasure of being in attendance, and it was my first-ever NPR Tiny Desk Concert.
