During her recent show at Vienna’s Jammin’ Java, Beth Nielsen Chapman introduced “Sand and Water” as “a song that helped me get through a big loss.”

In 1994, Chapman’s first husband died of cancer. A few weeks before he passed, he asked their friend and fellow singer-songwriter Rodney Crowell to come over and work with Beth after he passed. When Rodney heard “Sand and Water,” he told Chapman she didn’t realize what a powerful song she’d written because she was still deep in grief and mourning. The song resonated with people, and Elton John sang it “when he got tired of playing ‘Candle In the Wind.'”

Detour, on Concord Records (released Sept. 2022), is chart-topping jazz/R&B sax player Boney James’ 18th studio album. Appropriately titled, this latest album is a subtle stylistic turn that builds on the commercial success of 2020’s Solid, his highest charting release ever on the pop charts, peaking in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200.

Boney James dropped by Rams Head on Stage in Annapolis on Nov. 9 to perform songs from these albums and others, and Steve Satzberg was there to photograph the show.

A night at The Anthem is always fun. This was clear as a crowd recently eagerly awaited the start of the Since I Have a Lover Tour featuring the talented R&B/rap performer 6lack.

The night kicked off with opening acts Jordan Ward and Quin, but what made this tour truly special was that 6lack joined each artist on stage to perform the songs on which they had collaborated. Quin showed visuals of her music video “Run It Back” featuring 6lack.

Sometimes you need to change things up, try something a little different. That can be said about a lot of things in life, including music. That’s exactly why I recently covered The Gesualdo Six at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Georgetown.

Consider it aural sorbet — an ideal way to cleanse the palette of my ears.

To say that LP tours the world extensively is a huge understatement. After finishing up the massive tour for Churches — making up lost time due to the Covid-19 pandemic — there was announcement of the new album, Love Lines, and another huge touring schedule. But that’s not surprising given the amazing live show LP has become known for in recent years. And it’s not just the live performances. From working on songs for other artists to then building a sizable catalog of their own recordings, LP is a master of the craft of songwriting.

The new album, Love Lines, is LP’s strongest album so far with a comfortableness that feels classic. Songs like “Love Song” and “Golden” feel effortless in the way a lot of great pop music from the 1980’s feel — danceable grooves that stick in your head.  And each song seems like it’s in its own world. There really is something for everyone on Love Lines

“The greatest front-porch blues band in the world,” three-time Blues Music Award nominees The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, bring their raucous, gritty blues stylings to the Pearl Street Warehouse on Friday, Nov. 17. Though they’re only a trio, they bring the big noise. A hard-touring unit, they’ve opened for acts for like ZZ Top and played festivals all over the United States and Europe. Their albums have regularly topped the Billboard Blues Albums charts.

A growing number of entertainers or so-called creators have attracted large followings on the assortment of social media platforms proliferating as aspects of daily life today. In some cases, those numbers are compelling, but even followers in the millions can’t accurately predict or verify a digital celebrity’s ability to stand on a stage and impress a crowd.

Peter Martin appears to be cut from a different block than most of the sensations who post videos of themselves to the delight of many returning viewers. Known simply as “Petey” and wildly beloved by approximately 1.5 million followers on TikTok, Martin is showing that he’s far more than the curiously goofy and light-hearted bud depicted in his undeniably funny clips.

Live Review: Loudon Wainwright III @ Jammin’ Java — 11/5/23

udon Wainwright III is one of music’s great iconoclasts. He put his trademark wit, intricate songwriting, and unique personality on display recently at Vienna’s Jammin’ Java. He introduced a lengthy prose piece by saying, “I’ve been thinking about my inevitable memorial service.” He asked, “Why leave it to others to make the important choices?” and described what followed “not so much as last wishes as preemptive guidelines.”

What followed was a strangely morbid and very funny sketch of a scenario in which Wainingwright skewered his own turbulent family history. He described his two ex-wives at the memorial, bereft, turning to one another, saying, “I like the idea of my two ex-wives leaning on each other for emotional support.” He also described how all his ex-girlfriends would be there, looking beautiful and mysterious.

I can’t do it justice, and you have to know a little more about Loudon to get just why this was so funny.

“This isn’t a Night Sweats show,” Nathaniel Rateliff recently told the audience at The Anthem, referring to the group he normally tours and records with.

“Bless you for your ears and hearts,” he said, adding, “It’s taken four years to make this show happen.” Later, he thanked the audience for “letting me be a different character, and allowing me to be vulnerable in a different way.”
