Billed as an alternative to the Summer festival design of multiple stages, the Re:SET Festival rolled into Merriweather Post Pavilion Friday afternoon with a packed three-day schedule but “one stage with no conflicts.” Line-ups for each trio of dates rotate, and each day of the three-day festival is curated by the headlining artist with Friday’s kick-off at Merriweather hosted by the supergroup boygenius.

What feels different about Re:SET that becomes apparent as you set foot into Merriweather is the feeling of a regular concert event but all the trappings of a festival. And there’s no running from one stage to another to catch your favorite artists.

“I didn’t anticipate having a first album, or any album,” Joshua Hedley told his recent audience at Jammin Java. But now, he has two: 2018’s Mr. Jukebox and last year’s Neon Blue.

A native of Naples, Florida, Hedley got his first fiddle when he was eight. By age 10, he was playing in bars. “It’s all I’ve ever done,” he said. At 38, he’s been playing in bars for nearly three decades, and he’s learned a lot of songs. The title track of Mr. Jukebox — “a true story” — reflects on all these years playing and taking requests, especially at Robert’s Western World, a beloved (and one of the last) old school honky-tonks on Lower Broadway in Nashville, where he lives.

“Let’s shed our shame and our guilt and our pain and return to ourselves for a little while. Let’s all be here forever.”

Folk-pop singer Noah Kahan recently released Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever), the extended version of his 3rd studio album Stick Season with this poignant blurb. On that same day, he brought his New England charm and spirit to the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Maryland.

“People…will remember how you made them feel.

The DC region is an incubator for highly talented musicians. Historically, many of the world’s most influential musicians started out in DC: Dave Grohl, Eva Cassidy, Fugazi, Bad Brains, Ron Holloway, the great Duke Ellington, among many others. Parklife DC regularly covers many of the DelMarVa’s current best: Cathy DiToro (Legwarmers, Rose Riot, Herafest), Broke Royals, Wicked Sycamore, Karen Jonas, Cat Janice. Count Dante Frisiello among these artists who broke out of DC to do great things.

Dante’s story is a reminder that talent, drive, timing, and a good sense of humor pave the road to success.

In 2022, Bauhaus headlined the inaugural Cruel World festival, delivering a captivating performance under a blood-red moon that left the tens of thousands of concert-goers buzzing.

In 2023, Love and Rockets, consisting of all Bauhaus members except frontman Peter Murphy, returned to Cruel World for a well-received turn that launched a new phase of that band. Love and Rockets made their way across the country and weeks later appeared at The Fillmore Silver Spring. The very full room readily embraced the trio, suggesting a very good future indeed for Love and Rockets.

Only a handful of bands can truly command the stage like the Pixies do.

Frontman Black Francis and his bandmates were all business in an extraordinary 31-song set recently at The Anthem, where as usual they arrived with no planned setlist and played through selections from their eight studio albums.

Talking Heads guitarist Jerry Harrison teams with guitarist Adrian Belew to perform the music of the Talking Heads! They appear at the Lincoln Theatre in DC on Thursday, June 22. The pair originally started performing music for this tour to celebrate Remain in Light, Talking Heads’ fourth studio album, and the setlist draws from other Talking Heads albums as well.

As Talking Heads fans know, Jerry was originally a member of The Modern Lovers, a band that made a big impression on the Talking Heads when the band originally formed as David Byrne, Chris Frantz, and Tina Weymouth. The trio expanded to a quartet when they invited Jerry to join the band, and Harrison went on to become an essential part of the band’s sound over the course of eight studio albums. Indeed, Jerry launched a career in producing by first producing his own band!

On this tour, Jerry is joined by Adrian, who was also a significant player in Talking Heads, most notably contributing to Remain in Light, the 1980 album that lends its name to Jerry and Adrian’s current tour together.

Parklife DC’s Mickey McCarter chatted with Jerry Harrison about the joys of the tour, the legacy of the Talking Heads, and the unique position of The Modern Lovers in American music.
