Geordie Greep recently went solo, breaking out on his own and declaring his to be The New Sound — literally. That’s the name of the album he released on Rough Trade Records in early October, just weeks after it was confirmed that black midi, the previous outfit he fronted, was disbanding.

The many listeners who’d latched onto the London-based project voiced their disappointment on social media, as did former members of the group. But perhaps all in Greep’s plan, that conversation was drowned out, replaced by buzz for his premier record and the gigs he began booking before it even dropped.

“Who wants to spend their Thursday night listening to Chris Barnes make pig noises for 60 minutes?” Who indeed? This metalhead set out on a snowy January evening to Leesburg’s Tally Ho Theater for a night of downtuned riffs and guttural screams featuring legends Six Feet Under, with opening support from Psycroptic.

The Pacific Northwest based singer-songwriter has cultivated a significant Bellingham following and to say it showed would be the understatement of this still young new year.

First and foremost, a concert performance by Mystery Friends is a dance party. Such was the case at their recent EP release show at The Atlantis, where frontwoman Abby Sevcik got the audience grooving to “On the Floor!,” the title track from the five-song EP, by turning it into a call-and-response number where the audience shouted the refrain back to the band.

Mystery Friends want you to dance the night away, and the crowd did exactly that as the five-member collective introduced their new tunes.
