Don’t Miss: We Were Promised Jetpacks @ Black Cat, 11/06/15

We Were Promised Jetpacks
We Were Promised Jetpacks (Incase – 03/16/2012)

We Were Promised Jetpacks is coming to Black Cat on Friday, November 6 with Seoul. WWPJ is touring in support of their most recent album, 2014’s Unraveling, on FatCat Records.

Unraveling finds the Scottish band displaying a well-earned maturity, having been playing together since 2008, touring extensively over the past seven years, and releasing three studio records. There is a measure of restraint on many of the songs on this album, sonically embodying a coiled muscle just waiting to snap into percussive momentum. You’ll hear that muscle flex as well on this album, complete with grooves and instrumentals on the back half of the album, but as a whole, this record paints the later years of unsure young men, still uncertain, but more contemplative and striving forward.

It’s difficult to forget the center-stage drums that drove songs like “Quiet Little Voices” on their debut album, These Four Walls. They were one of the signature sounds of this band, a cornerstone of the post-punk side that sidled up against emo but never tipped the edge. They contained a energy that was Interpol without the leering darkness, Attack on Memory-era Cloud Nothings, with the angst more controlled (more being the operative word).

That iteration of the band was a strong one, one that brought them well-deserved attention, and they have since evolved during the intervening years. I don’t believe that one iteration of the band is better than the other, but instead that we as listeners are gaining a better fleshed-out band, one with deeper characterizations. We get a band that doesn’t hinge on just a few tricks but instead is more fully realized, more unique, more human, and more honest.

In the DC live music scene, the Black Cat holds a unique position. It’s perfect for yet-to-break-through bands bursting at the seams, and even more ideal for known names that thrive in tight, emotionally resonant spaces. We Were Promised Jetpacks is exactly that band thriving in this space. These are walls ideal for bouncing Adam Thompson’s vocals, for pounding Darren Lackie’s drums so resonantly you feel them in your bones. Take this opportunity to see this great, powerful band and you won’t be disappointed.

Just one week before the release of their first full-length album, Kill the One You Love (out October 30th), GEMS captivated the U Street Music Hall crowd with a bountiful selection of their dream pop infused new songs.

GEMS, or Lindsay Pitts, on lead vocals and a few instruments, and Clifford John Usher, on everything else, were almost too excited to start. The music began to grow and pulse two minutes early, before the lights flashed on precisely at 8:00pm. Then they unleashed the first song of the night, “Scars”.

At least five of the songs they performed were from the new album. After “Scars”, they played “Heartbreaker”, which is a gradually building, aerial song.

The duo is originally from DC, but moved to LA after they released their first EP, Medusa. When Lindsay told the crowd they were from DC, the venue lights lit up for a heartbeat. Welcome back. If only briefly.

Two previously released songs from Kill the One You Love, “W/O U” and “Living as a Ghost”, were highlights of their brief 7-song set (they opened for Autre Ne Veut). Both are ethereal, entreating laments to lost love.

There was a respectable crowd at UHall, that grew to not quite capacity by the time they were ready for the last song.

They ended the enjoyable set with “Sinking Stone”.

They have a few New York dates this week, before wrapping up their tour in Atlanta and Austin.

Stay vigilante and catch them the next time they come to DC! And come early.

You can still pre-order the album before it is officially released, via iTunes and Carpark Records. It’s good.

Don’t Miss: DC United Playoff Game @ RFK Stadium, 10/28/15

DC-United-2015Playoffs? Yes, the playoffs!

DC United had an up and down year. They were riding high as the #1 team for much of the first half of the season, only to fall back to Earth for the second half.

They finished with 51 points (15-6-13), good enough for the #4 Seed.

We won’t know exactly which team will show up on Wednesday, October 28th, as they begin their playoff run against the New England Revolution.

This is a one and done, so the losing team starts vacation immediately!

Thankfully, it is a home game, where the Screaming Eagles, La Barra Brava and other supporter clubs can cheer them on to victory. Let’s do this!

Tickets are still available here.

The Darkness fell upon the stage at The Fillmore Silver Spring, full of vigor and hijinks, ready to rock the night away on Sunday.

Frontman Justin Hawkins often prowled the stage like a cat, calling upon members of the audience in the very full house to sing along with the lyrics of his songs or to jump on stage and dance.

Justin ripped through one such fun number to which you can sing along — “Mudslide” from the band’s new album, Last of Our Kind, released in May of this year via Canary Dwarf. The band visited The Fillmore Silver Spring on a stop in the tour (called “Blast of Our Kind” and brought to us by L.A. music blog The Noise) in support of the album. As Justin tells us, the song “Mudslide” isn’t a metaphor or a double entendre. It’s just a song about a big natural disaster.

When it came time to call out the lines at the end of the song, Justin sought out a man in the audience in front of him. Justin tentatively offered the fellow his microphone.

“Do you have any herpes around your mouth?” Justin cried out, withdrawing his microphone.

And then after a pause, “Do you want some?”

Washington Capitals Report Card

Fortnightly Record: 6-1 (12 pts)
Overall: 6-1 (12 pts)

And we’re off! The 2015-16 NHL season is underway, and the Capitals have started quickly out of the gate.

Save for one bad game, the Caps have been impressive in their six victories so far, outscoring their opponents 29-13.

Alex Ovechkin has made a strong statement, scoring 5 goals, with 4 assists, already. Well on pace to reach the 50 goal plateau once again.

Evgeny Kuznetsoz (8 assists) and Nicklas Backstrom (4 goals) have also made huge offensive contributions.

The defense has also been solid, and Bradon Holtby (5 wins, 2.03 Goals Against) is looking like an elite goaltender once again.

This season should be fun.

We do need to get rid of the bad taste of last year’s ridiculous playoff collapse to the Rangers! (Things are looking up for DC sports overall: DC United made the playoffs and the Washington Football Team put together a last-ditch comeback to save their season. For now.)

(Note: Last season we did a Weekly Report Card. Depending on interest, we may consider that format again after the holidays.)

Hearing a favorite song over the air while at work is something many of us can relate to. It can provide a break from the task at hand; it can recall old friends and other times; it can lift the spirits in the middle of a long day.

In my case, the song I heard at work recently was a classic — “Comfortably Numb” by Pink Floyd. It has been a favorite since I heard it as a kid. The added bonus on this occasion was that it was being performed, right here in Omega’s Studio A, by one of the original artists, founding member Roger Waters.

Hearing the notes of the song drift through the studio control room, where I spend my working hours, made me stop for a second to just listen — and reflect. It was an immersive moment, not just for myself, but for everyone who shared in the experience. The staff of engineers at Omega Studios (5609 Fishers Ln., Rockville, Md.) put in a lot of hours and a lot of labor to make this hectic session a success, but I know that every one of us paused during the performances just to be there, to be in that moment. People need to be reminded to stop and smell the roses every now and then, to take in and experience an instant of perfection, but none of us needed a reminder on this day.

Autre Ne Veut - Arthur Ashin
Arthur Ashin, aka Autre Ne Veut, throws himself into song at U Street Music Hall on Friday, Oct. 23, 2015. (Photo by Peter Hutchins)

Arthur Ashin is a man of unusual aesthetics. As a singer, he sounds a bit like a Sam Smith. As an artist, he looks a bit like an Eminem. As an American, he adopted a stage name from an inscription in French found on an ornament in The Cloisters — Autre Ne Veut (“I want no other”).

Let’s add another layer to this puzzle of a man: As a performer, he throws his whole body into his stage act, belting out his bluesy voice while fervently enunciating his words into the microphone.

Autre Ne Veut released his third full-length album, Age of Transparency, on Oct. 2 via Downtown Records, and the alternative R&B artist made a tour stop in support of it at U Street Music Hall on Friday, Oct. 23.

Food Park: The Smithsonian Food History Festival, 10/24/15

Ingredients for Pipian (Pumpkin Seed) Dip & Texas Table Salsa

While you’re pondering what to have for lunch, remember that Saturday, October 24th, The Smithsonian will host a Food History Festival at The National Museum of American History.

What is a Food History Festival?

Well, expect lots of live cooking demonstrations (innovating salsas and guacamole or Oaxacan cooking, anyone?), book signings from authors of a culinary persuasion, agricultural displays, hands-on activities at the Spark!Lab and the Victory Garden, and a few film screenings and discussions. The documentary film, Farmland, following six young American farmers looks to be interesting.

Check out the full schedule.

Even if you don’t like food (please, you love it), this still affords you the excuse to visit The National Museum of American History once again!

Don’t Miss: Autre Ne Veut @ U Street Music Hall, 10/23/15

Hey, tonight is a busy night at U Street Music Hall. In the early show, alt-R&B artist Autre Ne Veut is headlining with support from former DC-based dreampop duo GEMS. Earlier this week, we told you a little bit about GEMS.

Well, we are overdue to tell you a little bit about Autre Ne Veut — French for “I want no other!” He’s actually American Arthur Ashin, hailing from Raleigh, NC, and he released his most recent full-length LP, Age of Transparency, via Downtown Records on Oct. 2. He performs tonight, Friday, Oct. 23, at U Street Music Hall in support of the album.

Listening to Age of Transparency is like watching a movie gone awry. It starts out traditionally enough with first track “On and On (Reprise)” but then the music warps and Arthur starts repeating himself as if a record is skipping. His voice slides up next to you like a smooth modern rhythm singer but the melodies tap you on the shoulder and say, “Uh, excuse me, but there might be something wrong here.”

In September, Autre Ne Veut released “Panic Room,” a smooth ditty that compares locking up love to being in a secure panic room.

The clever video places Arthur in front of a panel of judges who listen to him sing a capella. But they judges are more like psychological counselors than American Idol rockers. Is he seeking acceptance or parole? This really kinda sets the stage for listening to Autre Ne Veut in more ways than one.

Watch the official video for “Panic Room” by Autre Ne Veut on YouTube:

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_7-zOBqrDo]

In his videos, Arthur is typically clad in dress more akin to a hipster hip hop artist rather than an R&B crooner, occasionally appearing as a sort of super-villain, whose motives cannot be trusted.

He’s an intriguing fellow, and he’s sure to be a captivating singer tonight at U Street Music Hall.

Tickets are available online and at the door.
