Don’t Miss: Torche @ DC9, 3/29/15

torche237janettevalentine1

Torche are a metal band that’s not metal. They have a metalesque sound, and they have signed to metal label Relapse, but to hear the band tell it, they are here to rock.

And I have to agree. On first listens to new songs like “Loose Men” from their most recent album Restarter, released in February, the hard rocker quartet — consisting of lead singer and guitarist Steve Brooks, bassist Jonathan Nuñez, drummer Rick Smith, and guitarist/vocalist Andrew Elstne — are more apt to remind me of Van Halen than they are Avenged Sevenfold. (Although make no mistake, they sound like neither one.)

Press for the band say the band merges “huge infectious melodies with down-tuned, crushing sludgy rock,” which could appeal to those who like Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth or the Melvins.

Pitchfork called Restarter “an absolutely killer rock record — one that’s likely to appeal to listeners into any stripe of heavy music from the past 20 years.”

You have the chance to put this to the test, as Torche hit DC9 on Sunday, March 29 for the last date of their current tour in support of Restarter. You’ll get a lot of bang for your buck, as Torche bring along opening act Wrong (from their shared hometown of Miami) and local acts Jeff Carey and Black Clouds jump onto the bill as well.

Music Park: ShamrockFest @ RFK Stadium Festival Grounds — 3/21/15

gaelic-stormGaelic Storm

It is clear, after attending the 2015 edition of ShamrockFest, that I need to get myself to Galway, Ireland.

Because the girls.

Scythian, DC’s native purveyor of Irish tunes, crooned ‘and I lost my heart to a Galway girl’, in a lively cover of Steve Earle’s “Galway Girl”. Then later, Gaelic Storm performed their brand new “Girls Night in Galway”, an ode to the multitude of bachelorette parties that festoon the city.

ShamrockFest is an exercise in excess. An excessive amount of Irish and Celtic music. An excessive number of people dressed in elaborate green costumes. An excessive desire to visit Galway (for me, at least).

Strolling around the RFK Stadium Festival Grounds, there is no question that DC loves St. Patrick’s Day. Taking a cue from Carbon Leaf’s dance ready “The Donnybroke Affair”, you might describe ShamrockFest as ‘a rough-n-tumble free-for-all’ and ‘a ruckus to be reckoned with’.

Festival goers were ready for a day of music and beer. I would guess a large percentage of the sold-out crowd partook in the VIP package, which included access to an expansive VIP area and bottomless beer within.

The VIP area spread between the Gold stage and the Green stage. Aside from the dedicated beer stalls and a small DJ booth, it also provided cordoned off and up-close access to both stages. The lines for beer were so long that Red Frog Events eventually opened up VIP member’s access to all festival beer stands. Which then made all the lines long. We want our beer.

The sprawling Festival Grounds is not attractive (after all, it is a parking lot), but the three stages and the electronic tent were spaced apart so that you never felt overwhelmed by crowd movements and spontaneous dancing.

The beer selection was small, but with three choices and a cider (Guinness, Guinness Blond, Yuengling and Angry Orchard Cider), it was both appropriate and better than many festivals. The food offered was nothing beyond typical festival fare to further the St. Patrick’s Day theme. But Bailey’s Irish Coffee was on offer. Yes and thank you.

Other activities included Bear Pong (an outsized version of the classic beer pong) and Cornhole hosted by NAKID Social Sports. There were also stalls selling green things, kilts and alcohol infused cigars. Nice. There could have been more to do, if you wanted a break from the music.

The music options were an eclectic mix of Irish standards, electronic dance, covers, folk, fiddles, Celtic songs and a pinch of blues (Traveler) thrown in for good measure.

I was able to listen to a good number of bands on the Gold, Green and Dewey Beach stages, and did also poke my head into the DJ tent (Electric Isle).

The main complaint for the Electric Isle tent was there was a sizable pool of water in the middle, towards the back, courtesy of the rain from the previous day. People danced around it.

Here is my music lineup and brief notes on each.

Music Park: Scythian @ ShamrockFest — 3/21/15

Scythian (1)
Scythian perform in Dublin, Ohio, last year.

Scythian, DC’s homegrown Celtic band, stole the show at the ShamrockFest last weekend during their performance at RFK Stadium.

The polished banter and showmanship among the four current members was fully on display as they kicked off their set with their well-known “Irish Polka,” calling out to the crowded field before them to dance to your left! to your right! to your left! And they welcomed revelers to bounce back and forth with beers in hand.

Alexander Fedoryka, Josef Crosby, Danylo Fedoryka, and Tim Hepburn put on a spirited display of a group united as they earnestly enjoyed their time on stage as much as the audience. They appeared at ShamrockFest as part of a tour for a new acoustic album, Old Tin Can, technically scheduled for release on April 23. But some of the liveliest songs came from last year’s Jump at the Sun, including “Paint This Town” and “Fields of St. James.”

The Caribbean, DC pop trio (or quintet, depending on when you catch them), perform tonight at Bossa Bistro & Lounge (2463 18th St. NW, DC) in support of their new album, Moon Sickness.

New song “Echopraxia” sounds like a pleasant blend of twee pop and folk music wrapped in a layer of sophistipop:

Caps Report Card

Weekly Record: 2-1 (4 pts)

Overall: 39-24-10 (88 pts)
+5 pt advantage for playoff spot

The Capitals found what they were looking for in Buffalo and Minneapolis, taking two hard-fought points in each city.

Then they crossed over into Canada, and couldn’t get anything done against the playoff charging Jets.

Fine. It was the third road game in six days and Winnipeg looks like they’re hot at the right time, winning 4-games in a row.

The points lead for a playoff berth is quickly dwindling, however. Ottawa is playing out of this world, on a 6-game winning streak, behind their goalie’s, Andrew Hammond (13-0-1 in his first 14 NHL starts), ridiculous start to his career.

No time to get complacent. Both Boston and Ottawa are right behind the Caps.

There is a strange gap in the schedule, and the Caps don’t play again until next Thursday, March 26 at home against New Jersey.

Stars and Bars: Decide the Best Bar on Capitol Hill

The Irish Times
Kelly’s Irish Times, one of 64 Capitol Hill bars in Bar Madness

In the spirit of the March Madness that is the NCAA basketball tournament, everyone and their mother has created a bracket of some sort. Here at Parklife DC, we didn’t have time for that this year.

However, the Hill is Home has created one that I like.

Bar Madness. Pitting all the Capitol Hill bars against each other.

This year’s version has the requisite 64 entrants.

With upsets on everyone’s mind, who will wear the crown for 2015?

Music Park: Polyon @ DC9 — 3/20/15

Polyon – ‘Crest’ from Polyon on Vimeo.

On their Facebook page, trio Polyon describe themselves as “sludgie fuzzpop b/w of post-grunge.” While the sludgie part is hard to argue, critics (like WAMU and DCist) generally have agreed that Polyon represent an interesting addition to post-rock — and for good reason. The avant-garde mix of synths to a rock band along with an untraditional approach to songwriting have produced something that sounds like it could have emerged from an early ’90s basement recording session, but then took wing once emerged.

Their first EP, appropriately titled Three Songs, includes the tracks “Crest,” “More” and “Cough,” which they performed in concert to several dozen appreciative people at DC9 (1940 9th St. NW, DC) on Thursday night.

I’m really splitting hairs here, but “Crest” and “Cough” each soar amthetically in performance while “More” is more down to earth in the post-grunge that the band finds in itself.

[soundcloud url=”https://api.soundcloud.com/tracks/195240461″ params=”color=ff5500&auto_play=false&hide_related=false&show_comments=true&show_user=true&show_reposts=false” width=”100%” height=”166″ iframe=”true” /]

In Polyon, each of the band members pull their own weight. Vocalist and guitarist Ryan McLaughlin (also of Typefighter and other projects) marks the proceedings with a gruff voice but convivial spirit. Adam Lake on synths adds an element of playfulness to the “sludgieness,” while drummer Brandon Korch is really loud with arena-like stickplay.

The band have played roughly a dozen shows since their debut roughly six months ago, and Ryan announced they were set to go into the studio next week to record another EP, likely to be released online and in cassette format soon, which will include new songs already being performed such as the catchy “False.”

Polyon is an interesting project, and worth checking out if you are looking for something that isn’t afraid to sound different while still rocking out. While their next show has yet to be announced, they are likely to turn up with their new EP at DC9, the Pinch, or another DC venue very soon!

Don’t Miss: Firefly Music Festival @ The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway, 6/18-6/21/15

The Firefly Music Festival is returning for its fourth year to The Woodlands of Dover International Speedway in Dover, Del., for a long weekend of Thursday, June 18 to Sunday, June 21.

Festival ticket sales are underway, and early bird tickets already have sold out. Currently, music lovers can purchase $299 festival passes for the entire weekend or VIP packages at higher rates.

But the festival will not offer single-day passes this year, as it anticipates selling out its capacity of 90,000 attendees with full weekend passes, Red Frog Events, the organizer of the festival, announced Wednesday.

“We’ve seen an unprecedented increase each year since Firefly’s inaugural 2012 festival derived from our success in multiple areas,” said Greg Bostrom, director of Firefly Music Festival, in a press release. “This, in turn, eliminated our ability to offer single day general admission passes in 2015 as we plan to welcome 90,000 attendees, which will bring us to capacity this year.”

Headliners for the festival this year include the legendary Paul McCartney, who will close out Friday night. Kings of Leon headline Saturday night and the Killers close out the festival on Sunday. On Thursday, indie pop movers and shakers like Chari XCX and the Kooks are set to appear.

The 2015 lineup also includes Morrissey, Snoop Dogg, Foster the People, Bastille, Modest Mouse, Zedd, Hozier, Empire of the Sun, Kid Cudi and nearly 100 additional acts performing across seven stages, according to Red Frog.

Once the festival sells out of four-day passes at the general admission price of $299, it may offer “Encore” passes at $329.

Tickets are available online, and a payment plan is available for those who purchase before March 31. For more information, visit http://www.FireflyFestival.com.
