The always stylish Morris Day removed a handkerchief from his jacket pocket and dabbed his forehead. More than halfway through a show under intense lights, the singer and band leader of The Time began reacting to the heat.

“I know what you’re thinking,” Morris said from the stage of Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club on Friday night. “Morris Day is breaking out into a sweat on stage.

“But that’s not the case!” he countered. “Morris Day is like a fine bottle of champagne. When you take a bottle of champagne out of the refrigerator, what does it do? It undergoes condensation! So like that champagne, I’m condensating!”

Zak Starkey is a busy man. As drummer for The Who (since 1994), he’s been on a long tour with the band to mark its 50th anniversary over the past couple of years. Not one to rest on his laurels, the son of Ringo Starr has a newer group of his own called SSHH, and he will visit New York City with the band on Tuesday, Oct. 18.

SSHH gets its name from Zak’s partner in the group, Australian singer Sshh Liguz. The duo has completed a covers album called Issues, which they are funding via a PledgeMusic campaign. (You can support it online here.)

Music Park: Squeeze @ 9:30 Club — 10/11/16

Wow, how fresh and invigorating is the live music of Squeeze? I somehow had missed the band live in all of this time, given changes in the band’s membership over the past 40 years and various periods of hiatus, so I was not fully aware of just how powerful a band they remain in concert.

But I caught my first-ever Squeeze show at last at the 9:30 Club, where the latest iteration of the band sold out the night on Tuesday, Oct. 11 in short order. The crowd was practically bouncing off the walls in anticipation of a full Squeeze show, and boy did the band fulfill those expectations.

Founders Glenn Tilbrook and Chris Difford are clever songwriters who know how to hook you, and once you revisit their catalog, you will find yourself drawn into a series of remarkable hits characterized by a compelling narratives and intricate melodies.

Music Park: English Beat @ 9:30 Club — 10/11/16

“This song has been used by two presidential campaigns,” Dave Wakeling said of his cover of “I’ll Take You There” by The Staple Sisters, “and both presidents served two terms! So if you fancy being president of America, it appears that I’m your man! I’ll take you there!”

The number, of course, was used by the presidential campaigns of both Bill Clinton and Barack Obama, but Dave wasn’t overtly political in his appearance at the 9:30 Club on Tuesday, Oct. 11. He and The English Beat got down to performing the 1994 version of “I’ll Take You There,” recorded by Dave’s former band General Public, with vigor.

Ten years ago, the undeniable album of the year was Dying to Say This to You by The Sounds.

It was the second album from the Swedish quintet, and it blasted a whole in the existential dance floors of our lives with its unabashed new wave power. And for a while, lead singer Maja Ivarsson was the It Girl and everything was good – that hair! that voice! that attitude! those high kicks! (Hey, she’s got a Modesty Blaise tattoo, you know!) Being Swedish never looked so good. (…and that’s saying something — being Swedish always looked good, right?)

The Sounds will tour to mark the 10th anniversary of Dying to Say This to You, and they will stop at the 9:30 Club on Monday, Nov. 28 as part of that tour.

Here at Parklife DC, we also are big admirers of keyboardist/ guitarist/ songwriter/ wunderkind Jesper Anderberg, who I had the pleasure of interviewing in 2013 when The Sounds last toured the United States. (Read that interview at We Love DC!)

“We realized earlier this year that it was 10 years ago that we released our album Dying to Say This to You and embarked on a journey that took us on tour around the world for almost two years straight,” said the band in a statement to fans. “This was a magical time in our lives and we shared it with so many of you. Now we like you have gotten a little older, some have gotten married, had children, and it has been many years since we’ve hit the road.”

The tour launches Nov. 15 in Salt Lake City, and it visits the 9:30 Club on Nov. 28. Zipper Club and My Jerusalem are along for support. It’s going to be amaaaaazing! Tickets are available online!

Taking in the reaction from the crowd attending The Faint’s show at the 9:30 Club Saturday night, it’s clear that I’m amidst a pack of longtime fans.

While the band’s video for “Agenda Suicide” was on my playlist at some point way back, I am otherwise rather pathetically uninitiated with their extensive catalog. It’s evident that the band richly deserves the enthusiastic fan base that surrounds me, though. They let it be known that they have been paying attention for the preceding seventeen years.

Warpaint have a great new album, Heads Up, and the ladies are wrapping a US tour of it tonight.

But along the way, they hit DC last week to perform at the 9:30 Club (check out our pix) and Philadelphia on Sunday to play to a very full house at Union Transfer. I was able to catch the Philadelphia show personally, and I was impressed at what great form the Los Angeles psych poppers have achieved and how much the new material really suits them.

Whether you’re dressed up or dressed down, you’ll find a comfortable place to land and have a drink at Dodge City this Thursday. And if you happen to like the synthpop disco stylings of the Pet Shop Boys, all the better, as Careless Memories: A New Wave Party will toast the English duo and their long career with a DJ set dedicated to Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, along with their peers and contemporaries, on Thursday evening!

The Pet Shop Boys arrive in DC on Veteran’s Day next month to perform at Warner Theatre, and while that show is sold out, you can still celebrate the pending arrival of the Pet Shop Boys with Parklife DC at Dodge City tomorrow, Oct. 13.

We will play selections from the very first Pet Shop Boys album, the groundbreaking Please, and all the way to their latest, the stupendous Super. Along the way, we’ll add other groups that cross the new wave, house, and disco lines like the Pet Shop Boys.
