Minneapolis has been reeling for most of this decade, due large in part to the notable deaths that have come at the hands of various law enforcement agencies. But in that time one band’s been persisting, even thriving, representing the city’s artistry and its loving spirit.

Night Moves, an indie rock outfit from the larger of the Twin Cities, released Double Life — its fourth full-length album on Domino Records — last summer, months before the group’s hometown became the daily focus of national news. It’s said to be about persevering, not turning away from what life can throw at you, and by the members’ own admission the recording is their most personal to date.

SOVRN.NTH hosted a night of music, arts, and community on a recent January night headlined by Bellingham’s own Veronica North, with Anna Justen and Collins Beach also performing. But making the evening even more special was local artist Sierra James offering her work for sale as well as finishing one of her paintings live as the music played. Proceeds from the evening went to support the efforts of the Northwest Skate Collective to construct a skate park in partnership with the City of Bellingham. But there were so many special moments one could say the night produced magic as well.

Live Review: Caitlin Canty @ New Prospect Theatre (Bellingham, WA) — 1/29/26

Midway through Caitlin Canty’s show at the New Prospect Theatre (NPT) not long ago, while thanking the sold-out crowd for coming and sitting shoulder to shoulder in the cozy listening room, she commented on the best, and worst, this country has to offer. Along with bandmates Will Seeders (pedal steel, banjo) Jeff Berlin (drums, percussion), and Jeremy Moses Curtis (bass), Caitlin showed us exactly what is the best of us.

Stopping into Bellingham for the penultimate show of a quick West coast run in support of her new album, Night Owl Envies the Mourning Dove, the evening became a warm respite, if only for a couple hours, from the daily realities outside NPT’s walls.

On paper, Gabe Dixon’s Jan. 31 debut at The Barns at Wolf Trap already felt overdue. In reality, it felt personal – almost preordained. Gabe told the audience that during his first visit to Wolf Trap the previous summer with Tedeschi Trucks Band at The Filene Center, he’d been given a golf-cart tour of the grounds. When he peeked inside The Barns, something clicked. “Nothing against Jammin’ Java,” he joked, “but this place is special.” On this winter evening, he made good on that instinct.

Sweet Leda and Lower Case Blues recently shook the roof off Rams Head on Stage, taking turns with each other on their sets then mashing sounds together with dueling guitar and drums for a one time only performance. Sweet Leda decided to celebrate 20 yrs of marriage by having a party at Rams Head, so our tickets felt more like anniversary presents from fans and friends.

No article about or review of Della Mae can leave the fact that they are, in the male-dominated genre of bluegrass, an all-female band. But that’s trite, and it sells short that they’re one of the best groups playing this music. They’ve won awards and competitions for the instrumental prowess, and they have a Grammy nomination. In their recent appearance at the Hamilton, which was a hometown show for several members of the band, they showed off their estimable talents in two dynamite sets.

After a very successful tour opening for Geese, Racing Mount Pleasant (RMP) hit the road again for a January trip where they were the main attraction. Tickets sold out for their recent show at Songbyrd Music House over a month before the concert date, so it was no surprise seeing scavengers asking people in line if they had an extra ticket they were willing to sell them. On that note, it was shocking how many people were waiting in line before doors opened for such a small venue. Even one of the biggest snowstorms DC has seen in years could not overcome the buzz that RMP came to town with.

Each playing for about an hour, they delighted  the audience with favorites from their extensive songbooks as well as more recent material.
