Your Nationals are flying high to start the 2016 campaign. At 11-4, they are in first place in the NL East Division by 3-1/2 games over the Mets.

Stephen Strasburg already has three wins and 21 strikeouts, while Joe Ross has started with a blazing 0.54 ERA after three starts.

This weekend the Nats take on the Twins. On Saturday there is the first Pups in Park (bring your dog!) sponsored by Budweiser (their new beer partner).

Let’s Play Ball! But not with these.

Today is your Washington Nationals home opener!

For the upcoming season, here are four more things to look forward to:

  2. New food from the Pitch Your Product Culinary Contest – The two winners were Haute Dog and Fries and Pinch Dumplings.
  3. 80’s Night – On Friday, June 10, the first 20,000 fans get a fanny pack! And music!
  4. Pin Exchange – In one of the Team Stores, there will be a board with Pins, which you can add one and take one. Or you can just buy the one you really love. I mention this, because there was a really cool one from the Baltimore Orioles.

Sports Park: Beer Offerings at Nationals Park in 2016

Nationals ParkThe new sign on Budweiser Terrace at Nationals Park

The Washington Nationals opened their doors on Tuesday, March 29th for a behind the scenes tour of what’s new and exciting for the 2016 season.

Although there is a lot of good things to cover, now we focus solely on the Nationals Park beer offerings. Because we like beer.

One of the biggest changes for 2016, is the Nationals’ new partnership with Anheuser-Busch, replacing that of Miller.

In addition to more Budweiser beers than you can handle, this will bring changes to many of the areas you have grown to love hanging out in over the years. And it looks like they will be for the better.

All the of the names will be different. As follows:

  • Budweiser Terrace (was the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk)
  • Swing Big Beer Pen (was the Miller Lite Beer Pen)
  • Bud Light Loft (was the Red Loft)
  • Budweiser Brewhouse (was the Red Porch)
  • Lime-A-Rita Lookout (a new area in the Gallery Level)

FYI – In the Budweiser Terrace, they have also doubled the size of Shake Shack (because you said you didn’t like the long lines – they do listen!).

Beer snobs, don’t fret, there will still be a plethora of local beers found throughout the Park.

I’d love to create a map of where each beer can be found, but let’s take one thing at a time.

Local breweries: From DC: Beers from 3 Stars, DC Brau and Atlas will be on hand. Other local breweries that will have their beers available: Heritage, Mad Fox, Port City and Old Ox.

There will also be a Goose Island Pub and a Shock Top Bar and for those that don’t like change, Miller Lite can still be found in certain kiosks. Stella Artois and Blue Point Toasted Lager will also be on the menu.

Happy Hours: The Nationals will offer a very agreeable Happy Hour option; $5 Budweiser beer (until up to 30 minutes before the first pitch) that will surely compete with the festivities over at the Bullpen.

Tailgating: The white tent near the Home Plate Gate and aptly named, Home Plate Tailgate, will be available for 90 minutes before the first pitch as an all-inclusive group package, that will include games, food, beer and wine, and a game ticket. Minimum of 75 people, for $75 per person.

And on a beer/baseball related note, don’t forget to visit Bluejacket for their Opening Day Fest on April 7th. Read more.

Sports Park: The Nationals’ Homestand vs. the Marlins, Orioles & Phillies, 9/17-9/28/15

Nationals vs. Phillies: 6/28/2015Stephen Strasburg is 9-7 with a 3.98 ERA and 125 strikeouts

Oh boy. After a jaw-dropping 5-game winning streak to give us fans a glimmer of hope, the Nationals then proceeded to lose five games in a row, including getting swept by the first place Mets. Effectively eliminating our chances at a playoff spot. Sad face.

Now we sit 7.5 games back and the Nationals’ players can look forward to playing golf and canasta in the off-season.

The Beltway series against the also not good Orioles happens just in time for the Pope’s visit.

This homestand features not one, but two, bobbleheads! Calvin Coolidge (9/21) and Jordan Zimmerman (9/25).

As a bonus, the Nationals have an extra game added to the homestand, a make-up game with the Reds on 9/28.

For game tickets and more information, call 202.675.NATS(6287) or visit nationals.com/tickets.

Pope Francis’ visit to DC: Delays and closures surrounding the papal visit are expected to be significant. Allow plenty of extra time when traveling to and from Nationals Park. To help shorten commute times, Metro will operate at near-rush hour capacity throughout the day on the Wednesday and Thursday of the papal visit, and DDOT has released a series of alternate routes that fans can use to avoid road closures that will be in effect during that time.

Thursday, September 17 vs. Miami Marlins

  • The Nationals will honor the contributions of the Hispanic community to baseball and society by hosting Hispanic-themed entertainment throughout the evening. The radio station El Zol 107.9 FM will have DJ Solido at the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk before the game.
  • The Nationals will honor Denard Span for his ongoing commitment to single-parent families as the team’s nominee for the 2015 Roberto Clemente Award.

The Nationals are playing well in May and have a few good Memorial Day and military-themed promotions for their home games this week.

They are also adding a few new features to Nationals Park, like a stand that sells biscuit sandwiches (Virginia Country Kitchen) and a new team store.

Plus they are playing both the hated Yankees (May 19-20) and the Phillies (May 22-24), so you know it will be a fun homestand!

Tuesday, May 19 vs. New York Yankees

  • Nationals Tote Bag Presented by MLB Network: The first 25,000 fans to enter the ballpark through ALL GATES will receive a special 10-Year Anniversary tote bag presented by MLB Network.

With the opening of this stand, flavors from the D.C., Maryland and Virginia regions are now all available at Nationals Park!

Wednesday, May 20 vs. New York Yankees

  • Share a Coke: Beginning at 4:30 p.m., fans can personalize a Coke can with the Share a Coke initiative. The temporary stand will be located at the bottom of the Miller Lite Scoreboard Walk and will be open until 8:30 p.m., while supplies last.

Presented by the U.S. Navy, this award honors civilians for heroic acts or exceptionally outstanding service of substantial and long-term benefit to the Navy, Marine Corps, or Department of the Navy as a whole. It is the highest recognition that the Secretary of the Navy may pay to a civilian not employed by the Department of the Navy.

Around Town: Grand Opening @ Vida Fitness Penthouse Pool Club — 5/7/15

IMG_6669
The Penthouse Pool Club by Vida Fitness, Yards location, at dusk.

A hop, skip and a jump away from the Nationals Park stadium, Vida Fitness has opened its new Penthouse Pool Club (1212 4th St., SE, DC). There, Vida hosted a grand opening party for the summer 2015 pool season on Thursday, May 7, kicking off a comfortably upscale experience for club members.

DJ Finn spun some tracks over the crystal blue water of the Vida pool as guests sampled margaritas made with the Vida Tequila. The event served to showcase the amenities of the Penthouse Pool Club, which include a bar with a grill offering a full menu. The bar offers cocktails, beer and wine, and among the cocktails was the MargaVIDA — a tart blend of Vida blanco tequila, Grand Marnier, house-made sour, fresh-squeezed lime juice and fresh orange juice.

The menu, designed by Chef Spike Mendelsohn, includes salads (Watermelon Feta Salad, West Coast Kale Salad, others), sandwiches (Bacon Cheddar Burger, Lamb Burger, etc.), seafood (shrimp cocktail, ceviche, etc.) and additional offerings (hummus, mushroom quesadilla, etc.).

Guests can rent daybeds alongside the pool, or even on it, for a price, and of course they can rent private cabanas as well, which offer individual televisions and other creature comforts. Servers roamed the daybeds, taking bar and grill orders while guests lounged about.

From the roof at the Yards location, guests can enjoy views of the cityscape around them and peer down into the streets to see visitors to Bluejacket and other surrounding destinations. The luxuries of the Penthouse Pool Club are akin to those you would find in a Vegas resort, and the environment has quite a different feel than what many of us may have grown accustomed to in DC.

Vida Fitness offers a second location of its rooftop Penthouse Pool Club at its U Street location (1612 U St. NW, DC). The fitness club invites applications for membership through its website at http://penthousepoolclub.com.

Sports Park: NHL’s Winter Classic @ Nationals Park, 1/1/15

Anthems

The 1st Winter Classic hosted by Buffalo in 2008

DC is the home of the National Hockey League’s 2015 Winter Classic.

The Washington Capitals host the Chicago Blackhawks at Nationals Park on January 1st.

Yes, that means outdoors. Yes, it will be cold.

This annual hockey game (the 7th one) is one of the highlights of the NHL regular season.

This will be the first time that the Capitals have hosted the Winter Classic and the second time they have played in it (2012 in Philadelphia).

Not only is it outdoors, where fans are as cold as the players, but the teams usually sport throwback jerseys from far gone eras, which they are happy to sell to you.

Hockey fans in DC, this is the game to see.

College football fans, you can still TiVo the New Year’s Day bowl games and go instead to Nationals Park and have a classic good time.

Tickets are available via your least favorite resale site.
