No man knows / The hour or the day / But the mark is gonna be visible / From several blocks away – Mark On You
I remember the first time seeing John Darnielle performing at the one place I found that he was performing — up I-95 to Philadelphia and at the Khyber Pass — nearly 25 years ago. It was a little harder back then to find out when touring bands were in town, so Philly was just “up the road a ways.” With just a guitar and one heck of a voice, he immediately impressed me with the force of those songs — sung with an intensity only hinted at in cassette tapes.
Inspired by Billy Bragg’s recent Mother’s Day video release for his song “Can’t Be There Today,” City Winery and Billy are co-producing a special multi-artist Mother’s Day concert that will be broadcast on YouTube on Sunday, May 10.

Editor’s Note: This year, we asked our bloggers to name their Top 10 shows of 2019 or choose their Top 10 photos of the year. We will run them over the course of mid-December as our Best of the Year posts.
How am I going to do this?! Pick 10 favorites shots, moments, concerts, etc., from a year that was packed with them. Of course, the year had its fill of frustrations and challenges, as well, but those quickly fade from memory to be replaced by the realization that I am, indeed, very fortunate to combine two loves of my life, music and photography, into something I can share.
These moments, documented in the following images, all taught me something… about photography, about the power of music, and, ultimately, about myself; what I value, what moves me, and what’s important.

I’m way late to the party when it comes to The Mountain Goats but my excuse is that the musical road that brought me to John Darnielle and company was very long and winding. To say the least. It finally took me to 9:30 Club to see the band recently.
The Mountain Goats are coming to 9:30 Club for two nights next month! Parklife DC gave away a pair of tickets for their first night — that went so well we’re back to give away a pair of tickets for their second night on Tuesday, Nov. 7.
Folk quartet The Mountain Goats released Goths, their 16th studio album, in May via Merge Records, and they are touring in the wake of that release. They perform at 9:30 Club on two upcoming nights — Monday, Nov. 6, and Tuesday, Nov. 7. You can win tickets to see The Mountain Goats on the first of those nights with Parklife DC.
