Hometown hero Wale was welcomed back by a sold-out crowd for his 10th and final Wale and Friends New Year’s Day show at The Fillmore Silver Spring. Beginning in 2010, Wale started throwing the yearly show as a New Year’s gift for the DMV area while also providing an opportunity to showcase local up and coming talent. This year was no different as the likes Big Flock, Beau Young Prince, and Flex Kartel were just a few of the local stars to grace the stage throughout the night.
After a series of sold-out shows on his 2019 Everything Is Fine fall headlining tour and attracting rave reviews, Wale returns home to DC with his 2020 Wow… That’s Crazy Tour, named for his new album of the same name. “Woooow… That’s Craaaaazy” was the phrase I repeated over and over to myself, as the night built for the anxiously awaited return home for DC’s prolific son Wale! This was what it’s supposed to feel like when you’re a hometown hero. The Fillmore Silver Spring was supposed to have a line wrapped around the block. You’re supposed to bring out the homies Q Da Fool & Young Chris. What would normally amount to a ton of pressure, didn’t phase Wale. He just feels the strength: He loves his city and it loves him.

The weather is becoming more unpredictable each year, but our music festival calendars will never steer us wrong. The arrival of Coachella tells us Spring has sprung, and Firefly signals Summer. This year, the first day of fall was marked by the triumphant return of the Trillectro Music Festival.
