In 2016, Anthrax celebrated 35 years as a band, and released For All Kings, their 11th studio album, via Megaforce/Nuclear Blast. The album debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Hard Rock Chart, and #9 on the Top 200, becoming Anthrax’s highest-charting album in more than two decades.
Blasting out of that commercial success, Anthrax have been touring hard for the past two years, recently opening the farewell tour for their metal comrades in Slayer, and now doing the same for Lamb of God. Anthrax lit up The Fillmore Silver Spring on Monday in their tour with Lamb of God, and Paivi shot the show.
Anthrax displayed the talents of its core songwriting team — drummer Charlie Benante, bassist Frank Bello, and guitarist Scott Ian — as well as in the incredible vocals of frontman Joey Belladonna. Lead guitarist Jonathan Donais, who has been with the band since 2013, rounded out the team.
In their too-short set (hey, this was a crowded bill), Anthrax played several covers, including “Got the Time” by Joe Jackson and “Antisocial” by Trust. (Both top choices that speak to Anthrax’s versatility!) From their latest album, Anthrax played “Evil Twin,” and the audience ate it up.
Anthrax remains on their US tour through Aug. 26 in San Jose, California, before going to Europe! They’ll surely be back soon, but meanwhile here are some pictures of Anthrax playing at The Fillmore Silver Spring on July 30, 2018. All photos copyright and courtesy of Paivi Salonen.
