Kali Uchis played two nights at the 9:30 Club this week. Originally from Northern Virginia, Kali moved to LA after high school to pursue her career. She mentioned to the crowd that her first concert ever attended was at the 9:30 Club. So, her journey in the music came full circle this week as she sold out the club on Tuesday night.

Starting off with “Dead to Me,” she hypnotizes the audience with her singing and hips. Her outfit was very Como-La-Flor-Selena-Quintanilla-inspired, and it was very fitting that night because I wore my Selena shirt. Like Selena, Kali is big influence on Latinas in America. She wants everyone one to know that regardless of haters, you can make your goals a reality.

Isolation, Kali’s debut studio album, was released earlier this year, and it’s a contender for my favorite album of the year. It’s a blend of reggaeton, R&B, and pop. With the help from regular collaborators like Tyler the Creator and additional collab with Kevin Parker from Tame Impala, Isolation is a solid album from front to back.

Stream Isolation by Kali Uchis on Spotify:

Kali asked the crowd to pick a song from any her repertoire, including anything from her Por Vida EP or covers from other artists.  She chose audience picks, “Let’s Stay Together” by Al Green, “Speed and Ridin’ Round” from her own Por Vida. Favorite songs from the set were “Gotta Get Up Interlude,” “Your Teeth in My Neck,” and “Just a Stranger.”

Her tour continues this weekend with sold-out shows in New York City and it ends in Minneapolis on Oct. 23. Here are photos of Kali Uchis performing at 9:30 Club on Oct. 9, 2018. All photos copyright and courtesy of Brenda Reyes.
