Celebrating 20 years of The Teaches of Peaches, Merrill Nisker aka Peaches hobbled out on stage with a walker and vulva hat. Mocking agist criticism, porn granny was still going to give us a show.

At 9:30 Club on Aug. 24, Peaches morphed through countless costumes, unraveling layers of burlesque and camp and surrealism. She was joined on stage by an exceptional group of dancers and musicians who all seem quite happy with the theme of “as naked as legally allowed.”

At one point, Peaches’ band delivered a Bob Fosse-inspired interlude, and the crowd screamed. Everyone came to shake their dix/tits and “fuck the pain away,” as prescribed by the alt-hit of that title that appeared on Peaches’ 2000 album, The Teaches of Peaches.

Peaches ran through a series of rock cliches — crowdsurfing, licking her guitar, pouring booze on the audience — and it all felt both filthier and more vital than ever before.

Live music has a tendency to create a sense of camaraderie among the attendees, but an artist like Peaches builds a connection that can only be experienced not described. Abandonment of expectation — both musically and in performance — has described Peaches from the beginning, and she clearly had no intention of changing that.
