David Bowie, the single greatest musical artist to draw a breath in this editor’s estimate, was born on Jan. 8. He passed away seven years ago on Jan. 10. Given the significance of the upcoming week to Bowie’s life, many cities host a Bowie party or two during this period.
In DC, revelers can celebrate David Bowie at Put On Your Red Shoes And Dance: A David Bowie Birthday Celebration and Dance Party, at Pearl Street Warehouse on Friday, Jan. 6.
The David Bowie Birthday Celebration and Dance Party is a production of the Temptation Dance Party, a semi-regular DMV gem hosted by DJ Mellie Mel and DJ Scruggz (or Skruggz, depending). You may recall these excellent people from their various other endeavors as well! This writer once attended many a party hosted by Mel at Black Cat. And Michael Scruggs is well-known to fans of ’80s music for his engaging sets at the Poseurs reunion parties at DC9 in recent years.
Both DJs promise a fantastic mix of David Bowie tunes from over the years — undoubtedly including “Let’s Dance,” the song from which the dance party lifts its name.
Watch the official music video for “Let’s Dance” by David Bowie on YouTube:
Mel and Scruggs know their way around a DJ dashboard, and these long-time glam, new wave, and rock enthusiasts are sure to bring the right touch to a fun night for Bowie fans.
And if you really feel like going full Ziggy, Scuggs tells us that a face painter will be available to give you one of three Bowie looks:
- Ziggy Stardust Astral Sphere
- Aladdin Sane Lightening Bolt
- Labyrinth Goblin King Eyes
