Brighten your January with not one but two ’90s dance parties as DC’s Mousetrap joins forces with Baltimore’s Underground for a combined celebration of (mostly British) indie and alternative music at 9:30 Club on Saturday, Jan. 20.

Founded 1999 in Washington DC, The Mousetrap has retained its status as one of the most important DJ nights — becoming the progenitor of many nights to follow and establishing a huge pantheon of Britpop and indie-pop tunes as standards in the minds of party-goers. It was the first night in DC to break out Belle & Sebastian in 1999, Peter Bjorn & John in 2006, and MGMT’s “Kids” in 2008. Mousetrap generally plays a wide range of everything from mid-80’s C86 and late-’70s punk to the leading edge of indie guitar pop. Zimin is joined by his long-time DJ partner Stereo Faith.

Former Ottobar co-owner Craig Boarman started Underground in 2001. DJs Matt Walter & Craig Boarman return to spin Britpop, UK Indie, Madchester, and more! They feature bands like Blur, The Smiths, The Charlatans, Stone Roses, Oasis, My Bloody Valentine, New Order/Joy Division, Happy Mondays, Ash, Sleeper, Lush, Supergrass, Pulp, Cast, Suede, The La’s, Depeche Mode, Elastica, James, Ride, The Cure, Supergrass, and more, more, more!

Mark Zimin tells Parklife: “So you have 4 djs that are all friends because we love bands, and we love dancing at clubs and shows. For some reason, there was never an outlet for dancing at a club to indie guitar bands until Mousetrap established a club night in DC and Underground started in Baltimore. The indie bands we started with were Britpop bands, but as time progressed, great indie guitar pop was coming out of everywhere, and kept the dance floor a mix of fresh energy and classic tunes that still impact your heart the same way as when you first heard them. This music draws people together; it drew Mousetrap and Underground together as friends through our undying love for bands and dancers.”
