
Yamato is a Japanese Taiko drumming group based in Asuka-mura Nara Prefecture which is well known by Japanese people as the hometown of Japan. They call themselves “YAMATO, the Taiko drumming group that travels all over the world.” They have given more than 4,500 shows across 54 countries around the world since their formation in 1993.
Recently, Yamato performed in a vibrant and thrilling show at the Strathmore Music Center, and Steve Satzberg was there to photograph the performance.

With an impressive array of drums on stage, the globally recognized Taiko drumming group Yamato showcases the power of humanity and its mastery over technology through its incredible musicianship. On Jan. 23, Yamato presented their show, 人の力 ”Hito no Chikara” — The Power of Human Strength, at Strathmore Music Center in Bethesda, Maryland.

On stage, Yamato performed with over 40 Taiko drums, including the massive 500 kg “Odaiko,” crafted from a 400-year-old tree. Their performance blended intensity, emotion, and humor, drawing the audience into a shared, unforgettable experience. True to their motto — “We go everywhere when somebody needs YAMATO!” — they continue to spread the spirit of Taiko across the globe.
