A foggy, rainy night at Baltimore Soundstage provided the perfect backdrop for Nothing’s North American tour opener on March 4, supporting their newly released album, A Short History of Decay.

Osaka-based Violent Magic Orchestra (VMO) kicked off the evening with wickedly good energy. Their set fused powerful black metal vocals with industrial techno beats and off-stage crowd work, delivering a genuine adrenaline rush to the audience as they settled into the venue.

LA’s three-piece Cryogeyser followed with an eight-song set filled with warm, singer-songwriter vocals and an easy sound that evoked bittersweet nostalgia. Achieving a beautiful balance of warmth and melancholy, their music left you yearning for golden years past, in the best possible way.

Taking the stage just before the headliner, Philly’s Full Body 2 blended ethereal vocals with retro synth textures, transporting us through a cinematic time warp. The vocals never overpowered; instead, they were woven seamlessly into the band’s sonic tapestry, each element supporting the whole.

Nothing introduced themselves to the stage via a recording of Daniel Johnston’s “Devil Town,” then launched into “Toothless Coal,” the sixth track from their newly released album. Despite singer-songwriter Domenic “Nicky” Palermo sharing how the band had an extremely crazy week getting the record out into the world, the band had no trouble engaging the crowd. Fans cheered as the first familiar notes of “Famine Asylum” rang out. When the song faded into a sample and the solemn, disconsolate opening of “Purple Strings” began, the entire audience stood enthralled. You could have heard a pin drop as we all searched the liminal spaces of our own psyches.
