Hosting a Valentine’s Day celebration might not be every musician’s cup of tea, but Langhorne Slim is loved far and wide. And if his songwriting is any indication, he clearly has a gigantic heart.
Langhorne showed himself to be a terrific holiday host this past weekend, selling out The Atlantis in Washington DC on Feb. 14 and delighting the packed room with takes from his latest release, The Dreamin’ Kind, along with some of his most cherished songs.
He was decked out in a V-day getup, playing a bright red Gibson electric to start the show. But within no time, he’d made his way off the stage and over the barricade to scurry through the audience as he performed the first few tunes from the new record, including “Rock and Roll” and “Loyalty.”

Born as Sean Scolnick in Langhorne, Pa., Slim was supported in DC last weekend by Jeff Ratner on bass, Casey McAllister on keys, Malachi DeLorenzo on drums, and Marlon Sexton on electric guitar.
Langhorne’s latest recording is his eight full-length album; it’s his fifth release on Dualtone. He’s been recording since the early 2000s, and along his path he’s been able to tour with artists known worldwide — bands like the Avett Brothers and The Lumineers.

But the 45-year-old singer-songwriter’s still known to mix it right up with his audiences in small clubs, and his carefree antics in the nation’s capital made the appearance an unforgettable one.
He also endeared himself to those on hand, sharing personal stories from the days leading up to and after the birth of his son, Silver. He followed moving anecdotes with a tune he wrote for the boy: “Song for Silver.”
The invigorated headliner was even praised by his own crew for being a gracious leader: “You’re the light in our eye,” said Ratner. He piled on the compliments, drawing an emotional response from the audience.
As the set rolled along, Langhorne made his way back to the front of the crowd, plopping himself on the barricade with his acoustic guitar. At one point, he even brought one excited ticketholder up on stage to help him with some lyrics.
The intimate evening culminated with a two-song encore as the full band performed “The Way We Move,” the title track to the 2012 album recorded with The Law, and then Langhorne delivered an intense take on “Never Break” from 2017’s Lost At Last Vol. 1.
With such impassioned editions of two classics, Langhorne most certainly left couples, solo show-goers — everyone in the place — feeling fulfilled.
