Live Review: Thus Love @ Comet Ping Pong — 3/8/24

Thus Love opened their recent appearance at Comet Ping Pong with a new song, “On the Floor.” The band have been releasing music since late 2022, including a debut album, Memorial, via Captured Tracks, and today they are touring the country with a slate of new songs.

And these new songs like “On the Floor” are remarkable for their ability to capture the zeitgeist of late ’70s post-punk, particularly English post-punk, as these young adults from contemporary Vermont sound a helluva lot like young English people from 45 years ago. And that is fantastic.

Will Hoge isn’t shy about expressing his opinions. At the beginning of his recent set at Jammin Java, he told the crowd, “When in doubt, err on the side of shutting the fuck up.”

He apologized for the salty language but promised there’d be more.

Perhaps no group better interprets the canon of classic rock ‘n’ roll than Tedeschi Trucks Band. They opened a recent show at the Warner Theatre — the first of three nights at the venue — with a blazing cover of the Box Tops’ “The Letter.” The song gave lead vocalist Susan Tedeschi the opportunity to show off her soulful singing.

The Dandy Warhols release Rockmaker, their 12th studio album, on Friday, March 15 via Sunset Blvd. Records. As seen recently live at 9:30 Club, the quartet maintains their classic psych rock roots but dives into even a grittier edge that borders on post-punk and even goth.

If you thought the banjo couldn’t produce soothing, meditative, hypnotic music, listen to how Kendl Winter plays that most American of stringed instruments. Appearing recently at Bellingham’s New Prospect Theatre to perform in anticipation of her newest release, Banjo Mantras (Delicata Records), to be released on March 15, Kendl held an enraptured audience in her palm throughout the evening.

Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter/author Mary Gauthier released a new album, Dark Enough to See the Stars not too long ago, which followed on the heels of her book, Saved By A Song: The Art and Healing Power of Songwriting.

Now, the celebrated folk singer embarks on a tour, which includes a date at Rams Head on Stage in Annapolis, Maryland, on Wednesday, March 27.

Prior to her tour, Parklife DC’s Steve Satzberg interviewed Mary via email.

Flyana Boss brought their Bosstanical Garden Tour to The Atlantis in DC recently, and it was an incredible experience from start to finish. It was out of this world!

This hip hop duo gained popularity through their online success with “You Wish,” and now they’re taking their talent from running through our timelines to running from state to state on tour.

Louisiana “Bayou Soul” musician Marc Broussard is celebrating the 20th anniversary of his major label debut, Carencro. Part of the celebration is a tour where Marc and his band play the album in its entirety, along with some fan favorites from the rest of his catalog. The tour recently brought him to the 9:30 Club in DC .
