Awhile back, while perusing certain social media sites, advertisements for “Master Classes” would pop up on my feed, promising that I’d learn how to play guitar, or act, or become a writer if I enrolled. I’d simply scroll past because, honestly, who has time to sit in front of a screen to learn how to act? Ah, but attending a master class in person makes all the difference. When Grace Potter recently performed at her sold-out Bellingham, Washington show, I realized I was witnessing a master give a class on songwriting, performing, dancing, and the power of rock and roll at the Mt. Baker Theatre.

In the midst of a national tour to support her latest album, Mother Road (Fantasy Records), Grace (or Gracie as she is affectionately known) delivered a performance that encompassed everything a rock concert should be, from stellar musicianship and dramatic pacing to an imaginative stage setup and lighting.

But what defined the evening for me was Gracie’s generosity of spirit — toward her backing musicians, opening act Brittney Spencer, and the adoring audience.

And about a week ago, Two Door Cinema Club played its largest headlining concert performance to date in a sold-out show at The Anthem, as reported by bassist Kevin Baird.

Last year, Porno for Pyros announced their reunion tour, followed by word of new music on the horizon. But in a strange irony that Porno for Pyros reunion tour ended up being their farewell tour. The Horns, Thorns, en Halos Farewell Tour kicked off in February and recently landed at The Fillmore Silver Spring to an enthusiastic crowd.

Porno for Pyros grew from the dissolution of the Perry Farrell (vocal) and Stephen Perkins (drums) band Jane’s Addiction in 1991. That break-up also coincided with Farrell’s creation of the traveling music festival, Lollapalooza, partly as a farewell to Jane’s Addiction. The eclectic festival continues, and Farrell is still very involved in the event.

Lilly Hiatt has an underrated sense of humor. “I’m a big gas station enthusiast,” she recently told the crowd at DC9, introducing her song, “Kwik-E-Mart.” “I feel unguarded and seen at the gas station,” she added.

I had the privilege of attending Eric Bellinger’s recently headlining concert, The Rebirth Tour, at The Fillmore Silver Spring, and let me tell you, it was an experience. The night before the release of his album The Rebirth 3, concert-goers at The Fillmore Silver Spring were treated to a special sneak peek of new music.

Science suggests that celestial objects in orbit don’t actually lose or gain much momentum, but both Circles Around the Sun and Mikaela Davis & Southern Star are defying this notion.

Taking a big lap on a double bill titled “together again for the first time,” these two like-minded outfits from opposite coasts recently announced a co-headlining tour that instantly became must-see shows in cities scattered across the Northeast and the Midwest.

The anticipated run recently kicked off in the nation’s capital, and The Atlantis was sold-out and jam-packed well before Davis and her talented crew took the still-new stage within the 450-person capacity venue.

Joachim Cooder made a welcome return to Bellingham’s New Prospect Theatre on Leap Day 2024 to kick off a short Pacific Northwest tour. I was first introduced to Cooder’s music when he performed with Caitlin Canty in November 2023, so when it was announced that he’d be returning to NPT, I didn’t hesitate at the chance to see him perform again.

Thus Love is a post-punk trio from Vermont consisting of three young people who sound like they actually hail from England circa 1980. Thus Love are signed to Captured Tracks and released Memorial, a debut album, in 2022 and followed it up with some singles last year.

While we don’t know if Thus Love have new music, the band are making a stop at Comet Ping Pong on Friday, March 8, and we think it’s a must-see event for fans who appreciate vocalists like Gary Numan and Peter Murphy.
