Los Angeles dreampop quartet Saint Motel caught fire recently with their 2014 EP My Type, catapulting the band into indie fandom in a way their debut album several years later had not.

For my type, the ’60s-tinged band adopted mod iconography for singles “My Type” and “Cold, Cold Man,” demonstrating a sense of style and fun. The instincts that guided the band into adopting the flavor served them well as they are poised to release their second full-length album saintmotelevision on Oct. 21.

The day prior to that record release, Saint Motel visit the 9:30 Club on Thursday, Oct. 20 as a stop on their current US tour, and Parklife DC is giving away a pair of tickets for you to go see the show.

First, watch the devilishly clever official music video for “My Type” by Saint Motel on YouTube, which manages to get you involved by the end:

Don’t Miss: La Sera @ Songbyrd Music House, 10/20/16

Los Angeles noise poppers La Sera are staying busy! The band, fronted by the effervescent Katy Goodman, released a full-length album, Music for Listening to Music to, in March. They toured on that album, performing at the 9:30 Club in May. (Read our review of that show!)

Surely not done for the year, La Sera dropped a new extended play, Queens, via Polyvinyl Records on Sept. 30. Then on Friday, the band launched a tour with their friend Springtime Carnivore, who also has new music! (Don’t be fooled by the name; Springtime Carnivore is the winsome Greta Morgan, who has collaborated with La Sera in the past. Read our interview with Greta!)

The La Sera tour with Springtime Carnivore stops in DC at Songbyrd Music House on Thursday, Oct. 20.

The new La Sera EP contains a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” which is a song they have performed live with their easygoing psychedelic flavor for a while. Listen to La Sera’s cover of “Whole Lotta Love” by Led Zeppelin on Soundcloud:

As we previously have noted, Katy and Greta also recently collaborated by covering a set of punk tunes, publishing the resulting album, Take It, It’s Yours, on Polyvinyl Records over the summer. Perhaps we will hear them tackle Iggy Pop or The Misfits or the Buzzcocks together at the show?

Rock trio Lilac Daze, hailing from Frederick, Maryland, open the show! Tickets are available online.

Greta Morgan released her second album as Springtime Carnivore on Friday, Oct. 7 – and that same day she set upon a US tour with La Sera, hitting more than 20 cities.

The material for the new album, Midnight Room, sprang from a break-up but the songs didn’t take the shape of melancholy heartbreak. Instead, songs like “Face in the Moon” are full of jaunty reflections and wry observations on life and love that feel far more empowering than depressing.

New Release: ‘Nothing Feels Natural’ by Priests, 1/27/17

DC punk quartet Priests announced their debut full-length album, Nothing Feels Natural, which will see release on Jan. 27, 2017, via Sister Polygon Records, their own label.

In 2014, Priests grabbed our attention with a significant EP, Bodies and Control and Money and Power, which contained seven songs of punk rock fury. Since that time, Priests have been playing new songs live, suggesting that another release was in the works. Those songs have now culminated into this new album, announced today.

The band — consisting of Daniele Daniele (drums), Katie Alice Greer (vocals), GL Jaguar (guitar), and Taylor Mulitz (bass) — has matured a great deal sonically since the release of Bodies and Control and Money and Power, and I find that Gideon Jaguar’s surf-forward rockabilly guitar has become a more pronounced pillar of Priests’ overall sound.

Watch the official music video for “JJ” by Priests on YouTube:

According to a press release today, the Nothing Feels Natural album materializes thematically as “nine stories that crystallize into a bigger picture about the economics of human relationships, the invisibility of feminized labor, and the dual purpose of art for both the group and the individual.”

Sister Polygon also has supported various Priests side projects in recent months, including the bands Gauche and Flasher as well as an EP from Katie under the moniker KAG — EP A, released only this past Friday, Oct. 7.

DC United's New Logo

Season Record: 10-9-13 (43 points)

Your D.C. United is on a hot streak. Winning three games in a row and going 5-1-4 (19 points) over the last 10, they have made themselves known to the Eastern Conference as a real threat. They are here for the playoffs, and they will not be denied.

Sitting in 5th place, with two games remaining, the United are definitely poised for another playoff run. They just need one more win to clinch a spot. They take on 1st place New York City FC on Sunday, October 16th.

The United are 0-2 against NYC FC this season, but I still think they keep the winning streak alive at home, so come out and witness victory. Buy your tickets here.

Last week, I ruminated on how things seemed to be going swimmingly for the All Things Go Fall Classic, held in DC on Saturday: Hurricane Matthew wasn’t going to approach DC, Passion Pit had not canceled, top act Empire of the Sun released exciting new music.

Then, Saturday came with consistent and gloomy rain despite no hurricane, turning all of Yards Park into a giant mudpit. Everything got splashed with mud, and the Fall Classic was turning into a Tough Mudder for the dancehall set, whether you liked it or not.

“This is our last song. You know what it is.” As the heady notes of “Sweet Disposition” reached the dancing part of our brains, everyone at the crowded 9:30 Club not moving suddenly found invigorating purpose. Dougy Mandagi, lead singer of The Temper Trap, brought the dancing throngs to an epic finish for their show on October 6th. “A moment of love, a dream, a laugh, a kiss, a cry.”

The sprawling ska band The Specials visited the Fillmore Silver Spring last month, and our friend Ben Eisendrath was there!

Ben sent over a few cool snaps he took during the show, which was a hit among all of the rude boys and girls who went on Saturday, Sept. 10. According to Setlist.fm, The Specials played several of their high-profile hits that night, including “Ghost Town,” “Friday Night, Saturday Morning,” and “Stereotype,” which are enduring dance staples that serve as reason enough to keep The Specials coming back around in their various iterations!

The Specials wrapped up their latest US tour in Las Vegas on Sept. 30, and they are about to embark on a UK tour starting Oct. 19. Quite a few of their UK dates are sold out through October and November, but catch them if you can!

Music Park: Band of Skulls @ Black Cat — 10/4/16

Tendrils of smoke drifted into the crowd as the three members of Band of Skulls took the main stage at the Black Cat on Tuesday, October 4th.

Amidst the dissipating smoke, they immediately started with “In Love By Default” from their new album, By Default. They played a mere four songs from that album, and all early on. The highlight of the new crop of songs is the upbeat “So Good”. Russell Marsden’s guitar intro grabbed you and gave us among the healthy-sized crowd a reason to move and nod their heads in unison. I’m still humming it now.
