“Brother Thomas, where is my mirror?” demands Morris Day.

In a snap, Thomas Austin swoops up a large mirror for Morris, who peers into it to adjust his hair and suit while preparing to perform for a good crowd at The Howard Theatre on Saturday night. The audience delights in the theatric exchange, which echoes a famous scene by Morris in “Purple Rain,” the 1984 movie in which Morris portrayed the rival to Prince’s “The Kid.”

1996 was the year of attention grabbing breakouts: Hotlanta hosted the summer Olympics to catapult itself to the now entertainment mecca of the South, former Vice President Al Gore demonstrated the Macarena dance to the world, and Tickle Me Elmo arguably caused childhood frenzy. Though, in the world of RnB, Elgin Baylor Lumpkin, also known as Ginuwine, emerged out of the collaborative shadows of now superproducer Timbaland to start his solo career with the frenzied single, Pony! Two decades and seven albums later, the Grammy-nominated singer returned home to DC on Friday and reminded the Howard Theatre why he’s still the Same Ol G’.

Cold Cave open their show Wednesday night at DC’s Rock and Roll Hotel with “Love Comes Close,” coincidentally the song that first initiated my interest in the band. For the duration of their opener, the look of the stage is appropriately understated.
