Around Town: H Street NE Festival, 9/17/16

This year’s H Street Festival takes place on Saturday, September 17th and will feature over 250 vendors, plying their food, drinks, wares and activities.

It will span a lengthy 10 blocks (bigger every year) between 4th St. NE and 14th St. NE.

Look out for the music, the beer gardens, a pie eating contest, dance performances, fashion shows, a DC Comics superhero costume contest and much more.

The festival won Washington City Paper’s Best Community Festival six years running. It does get quite crowded, with estimates of 125,000 adventurers from last year!

There is also a handy app from H Street Main Street you can download, to ensure you don’t miss anything. Search for and download ‘H Street Main Street’ from the iTunes App Store or Google Play.

UPDATE on 9/15/16: The Festival app has been updated with performance/music stage locations, lineups and times. Looks like there will be nine stages and something for everyone. Download the app now. You can also find the schedule of performances here.

Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant are bringing Echo & The Bunnymen back to DC in a sold-out show at the 9:30 Club on Friday, Sept. 9! To celebrate, Parklife DC is throwing a little new wave party that we are calling Careless Memories: A Salute to Psych, where we will play a lot of the neo-psychedelic jams that gave classic new wave a hazy electronic edge.

I invite you to join our party, which will be held at Dodge City on Thursday, Sept. 8 (right around the corner from the 9:30 Club on the night before The Bunnymen perform)! You can RSVP on Facebook or show up — admission is free.

But wait! To take the celebration to the next level, we are giving away a pair of tickets to the sold-out Bunnymen concert! Now, that’s smart thinking! Ian would be proud.

Don’t Miss: Dinosaur Jr. @ 9:30 Club, 9/8/16

Dinosaur Jr. have had a roller coaster ride of a journey leading to their most recent album, “Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not,” released on August 5th through independent record label Jagjaguwar.

Dinosaur Jr. was formed in the mid-80s with lead singer and guitarist J Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Emmett Jefferson “Murph” Murphy III. Tensions grew as they often do in bands and after three albums Lou Barlow left the band, followed a few years later by Murph.

Fast forward and the original lineup is back together and touring again. In 2009, the rock trio signed with Jagjaguwar and has since released three albums, including their latest, which they are currently on tour promoting.

The tour kicked off on August 12th and will soon be coming through the Nation’s Capital. Dinosaur Jr. will perform Thursday, September 8th at the 9:30 Club with doors opening at 7:00 PM.

“Give a Glimpse of What Yer Not” has already been received warmly and it is pretty clear that Dinosaur Jr. is not some ’80s band holding on by a thread; these guys are at the top of their game… still!

“After more than 30 years, it’s thrilling that Dinosaur Jr. are continuing to hit the festival circuit and making more fans each go-around. The fact that they’re still making new music worth hearing is another reward entirely,” said Consequence of Sound.

Formerly known as The Walking Sticks, local DC band SHAED performs at the 9:30 Club on Saturday, September 10th, opening for Marian Hill, an electronic duo with R&B influences from Philadelphia.

With new music to their credit, SHAED looks to keep winning over DC denizens to their cause.

SHAED is Chelsea Lee on vocals and the twin brothers Max and Spencer Ernst on all instruments.

They released two new singles recently, “Thunder” and “Running Through the Fields”, both highlighting their groovy, pop sounds and Chelsea’s powerful voice.

Last month’s edition of Careless Memories: A New Wave Party at Dodge City was a hit! And it also had a theme: the songs of early MTV.

Well, this month I return with a fresh theme: A Salute to Psych. You see, I’m inspired that Echo & The Bunnymen perform at the 9:30 Club on Friday, Sept. 9! And so Careless Memories (A New Wave Party) salutes the neo-psychedelic artists that had great crossover hits between the parallel lines of new wave and neo-psychedelia.

Don’t Miss: Crystal Castles @ Black Cat, 10/8/16

Fans of Toronto electronic outfit Crystal Castles let out a collective gasp when Alice Glass left the group to go solo in 2014. But producer Ethan Kath shrugged and suggested he always intended to collaborate with singers other than Alice, and he promptly recruited Edith Frances as the new Crystal Castles frontwoman.

On August 19, the electronic duo released a fourth Crystal Castles studio album, Amnesty (I) via Casablanca Records. Admirers of the band are likely to find it very reassuring as it hits all of the upbeat glitchy notes you would expect from Crystal Castles and Edith’s washed out vocals on songs such as “Concrete” dovetail nicely with the noise.

In support of the new album, Crystal Castles hit the road on Tuesday, Sept. 6 in Carrboro, NC, and perform in a show at the Black Cat on Saturday, Oct. 8. It’s already sold out.

Other singles from the new album – “Frail” and “Deicide” — hit #1 on The Hype Machine, suggesting a reinvigoration of the Crystal Castles mythos. NME ranked the band’s self-titled debut album in 2008 at #39 in its list of Top 100 Greatest Albums of the Decade. In 2010, the second Crystal Castles album, (II), gave us the memorable “Not in Love,” which featured vocals by Robert Smith of The Cure. And in 2012, the third album (III) was the #1 album of the year on The Hype Machine.

Recently, we ran into Ian Svenonius hanging out at the Black Cat after seeing the Julie Ruin.

DC’s own independent rock n roll icon obliged us with a few quick photos, but we didn’t take the opportunity to ask him about his next project.

Surely, he has something up his sleeve! Ian’s last album was Minimum Rock N Roll with his latest group Chain and the Gang on Dischord Records in 2014. (Buy it here!)

I’m sure we’ll hear or read something new from our prolific man o’ music soon.

Don’t Miss: Lush @ 9:30 Club, 9/21/16

Inspired by a specific pal who’s quite a music fanatic, when discussing bands, some friends will occasionally quip, “Yeah, but are they worthy of 4AD?” – referring of course to the legendary UK record label. (It’s maybe the music nerd equivalent of “Do you even lift, bro?”)

A band clearly worthy of 4AD is shoegazing quartet Lush, who released their three full-length albums, beginning with Spooky, in the ’90s in the label’s heydey. And now the seminal shoegazers have reunited 20 years after their last studio recording, and they return with new music!

In April, Lush released the Blind Spot EP via their own Edamame label, and they have set about a world tour that brings them to the 9:30 Club on Wednesday, Sept. 21. (Lush last played the 9:30 Club almost exactly 20 years ago on August 30, 1996! See the setlist.)

How wonderful is it to hear vocalists and guitarists Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson sing and play a new tune? Watch the official music video for “Out of Control” by Lush on YouTube:

Miki and Emma of course are joined by bassist Phil King. And admirers of Lush will recall the band dissolved upon the death of original drummer Chris Acland. To fill in for the irreplaceable Chris, Lush have recruited Justin Welch, an old friend who drummed for Spitfire and then Elastica.

New Zealand dream pop singer Tamaryn opens for Lush. Tickets are available online.

Rock trio Cardiac recently were sitting around with the Bangles, discussing music they loved, and an idea took root.

“Susanna [Hoffs] suggested that we cover The Rolling Stones,” vocalist David Jonathon DiSarro told his audience at Ram’s Head On Stage in Annapolis Tuesday. “So here’s our cover of ‘Jumpin’ Jack Flash.'”

Joined by the Bangles’ touring bassist, Cardiac ripped through a fun cover version of the famous blues number, delighting the sold-out room with the familiar tune while also giving some insight into the band’s own inner workings. Opening for the Bangles on the girl group’s tour, Cardiac continued to hold the attention of the room with classic rock and roll delivered by David’s heartfelt voice. He’s capably complemented by soaring guitar by Jarod Woznik and rolling drums from Don Bish.

Don’t Miss: Terry Bozzio @ The Hamilton Live, 9/20/16

In an interview with “The Idiot” many years ago, Terry Bozzio recalled how he came to audition for Frank Zappa in 1975 and approached the audition a bit differently than most drummers playing for Frank.

“The one thing I’d noticed was a lot of the drummers were sort of flaunting their chops,” Terry recalled. “I thought the least I could do was go up there and listen and try and play with the guy. So I did the best I could; sight-reading a very difficult piece, memorizing a very difficult piece, jamming with a very odd time signature — like 19 — and then playing a blues shuffle.”

Frank was impressed and Terry went on to work with him on 26 albums! But Terry got involved in many other projects as well, including the new wave outfit Missing Persons, most notably to us here at Parklife DC.

The legendary drummer does not keep still, always touring, always recording, and always innovating. In late 2015, Terry published the Terry Bozzio Composer Series via Ward Records in Japan, and this year, he launched “An Evening With Terry Bozzio” US tour. That tour comes to DC when Terry plays at The Hamilton Live on Tuesday, Sept. 20.

The “Composer Series” contains 59 individual pieces of music with a painting by Terri in a booklet for each title, along with detailed liner notes for each piece, explaining the process and concept for each piece. On tour, Terry is taking an equally expansive approach.

“I’m looking forward to this extensive US tour in August to November 2016. I’ll have some new pieces to play on my big kit and hopefully some surprises for you in this new show,” Terry said in a press release.
