Years ago, in another lifetime perhaps, I last had the fortune to see Chan Marshall, known by her performing name, Cat Power, in an early career performance at the Black Cat. And even though 25 years have passed since that time, the magic encased in that voice has only grown stronger — as evidenced in Cat Power’s performance at the Lincoln Theatre in DC Friday night.

Live Review: Cat Power @ Lincoln Theatre — 9/25/19

Cat Power turned back the clock to start her set at the Lincoln Theatre recently. Twenty-one years ago, she released her album Moon Pix. Two of its mains themes are loneliness and disillusionment. The song “He Turns Down” references Chan Marshall’s feelings of alienation from religion, particularly in the line “I’m not saved he turned me down.”

Live Review: Cat Power @ 9:30 Club — 12/16/18

“She is in the zone tonight.”

You could truly say that of Cat Power at 9:30 Club on Sunday. But in the past, that wasn’t a comment one might expect to hear at her show. Although she’d long produced great work in the studio, indie rocker Chan (pronounced Shawn) Marshall’s live sets had a tendency to go off the rails. Before she got sober, alcohol compounded Chan’s stage fright, which she faced by taking the prescription anti-anxiety drug Xanax — the two do not mix especially well.
