“Never applaud a guy putting on a harmonica,” The Decemberists frontman Colin Meloy joked as he prepared for “Down By The Water” near the end of their set at Wolf Trap recently. It was the indie-meets-folk-rock band’s first time at the venue, which Meloy repeatedly referred to as “The Trap.” Reflecting on this verbal tic, he pondered, “Does anyone call it ‘The Trap?'”

To answer his question, I don’t know I’ve ever heard it said out loud. I’ve definitely thought of both the larger national park and the music venue itself as ‘The Trap,’ but it’s not something I’ve said.

Music Park: The Decemberists @ The Anthem — 4/21/18

Fun was the word of the day as The Decemberists delivered it to a packed house at The Anthem with a Saturday stop on their Your Girl/Your Ghost World Tour. Playing songs old and new, the indie rock mainstays treated the crowd to an evening of their quirky charms, complete with obscure historical references, audience participation, and a giant floating whale.

Don’t Miss: The Decemberists @ The Anthem, 4/21/18

The Decemberists released I’ll Be Your Girl, their eighth studio album, on March 16 via Capitol Records. The chamber pop ensemble are now on their Your Girl/Your Ghost 2018 Tour, and they will perform in DC at The Anthem on Saturday, April 21.
