Strange times are best scored with a bizarre and darkly complex soundtrack. We are clearly in such times, and thanks to the Black Cat’s eclectic schedule, including the occasional Canadian band, DC area fans were recently given a healthy dose of avant-garde rock, only a couple days before local venues started canceling shows.

Chamber poppers Destroyer released ken, their 12th studio album, in October via Merge Records. Destroyer launched a North American tour last night in Portland, Oregon, and the band will visit DC to perform at Black Cat on Sunday, Jan. 28.

Once, Shaun Frank was a part of a band named Crowned King and only due to a lot of minor hiccups, they disbanded and he followed a new path as an electronic music DJ.
And The former Canadian frontman of a rock band recently showcased his ability to take a crowd by storm when he took center stage in the Nation’s Capital at Echostage on Friday, Oct. 27.

The Belle Game gently ensnared a very full house at 9:30 Club on Wednesday, soothing souls while lifting spirits with atmospheric dreampop.

The Belle Game released Fear/Nothing, their sophomore album, on Sept. 8 via Arts & Crafts, and the Vancouver band are touring as openers for fellow Canadians Broken Social Scene. The tour stops at 9:30 Club for two nights on Tuesday, Sept. 19, and Wednesday, Sept. 20. The first night sold out, but tickets remain for the second night of two strong rock bands.
