In April, Diana Ross saw her seminal album Diana released in its original mix by Nile Rodgers and Bernard Edwards on vinyl for the first time ever. Diana – The Original CHIC Mix appeared on two 45rpm discs via Motown/UMe/UMGI.
The classic album features irresistible disco tracks like “Upside Down” and “I’m Coming Out.” And it just so happens that Diana is on tour, so you can hear her sing them live when she comes to Wolf Trap on Tuesday, July 25.
Nile and Bernard, famously of CHIC, wrote the songs, produced the record, and mixed the tracks for the original cut of the album. Those original mixes from Diana – The Original CHIC Mix first surfaced in a 2003 deluxe edition on CD, but they never previously appeared on vinyl. The album released in 1980 — Diana Ross’ 10th solo studio album — presented an alternate mix that the record company believed was “more commercial.”
In whichever form, those electric songs certainly have withstood the test of time. Watch the official music video for “Upside Down” by Diana Ross on YouTube:

David Friscic praised Diana’s performance in her last visit to DC to perform at The Kennedy Center Concert Hall on Dec. 1, 2016. Writing for DC Metro Theater Arts, David said, “Ms. Ross’ voice is a musical wonder and the years have not changed her effortless skill at a loquacious, supple, and naturally emotive singing style that can cover the emotion of soul, the syncopation and beat of pop, the elongated pauses and timing of ballads, the audacious sheen of theatrical songs as well as some superb jazz-edged songs.”
