David Byrne, former frontman for the Talking Heads, remains one of the most remarkable and fascinating musicians making music today. David released American Utopia, his 11th studio album, in March via Todo Mundo and Nonesuch Records. It was his first solo album since 2004, and it hit a career-high #3 in the Billboard Top 200 upon its release.

The legendary performer holds court in a sold-out show at The Anthem on May 12, but tickets are still available for another performance at Merriweather Post Pavilion on Saturday, July 28.

David’s latest album is part of a larger project. American Utopia, like his speaking series “Reasons to Be Cheerful,” named for the song by the late Ian Dury, questions the current state of society while offering solace through song. The speaking series and album both recognize modern despair but calls for optimism in light of things such as technological breakthroughs, innovative planning, or wonderful music.

David recently released American Utopia: Detroit, a video for “Everybody’s Coming to My House” from American Utopia, featuring a performance of the song by Detroit School of Arts Vocal Jazz Ensemble students.

Said Stereogum of the new record, “American Utopia is an album full of pulsating beats and rich textures. You could also say that about any Talking Heads record, but the new album isn’t a throwback; it feels like it could only exist right now.”

Undertaking his biggest tour in years, David sold out The Anthem in DC for May but still has some tickets remaining for Merriweather Post Pavilion in July.
