The Dustbowl Revival recently returned to one of their favorite venues, The Hamilton Live in DC, for a riveting performance. It was the band’s first show in the DC area since a February 2020 appearance at 9:30 Club.

A brass and strings band known for its roots dance music, The Dustbowl Revival has undergone a significant evolution driven by personnel changes occurring since that pre-pandemic 9:30 Club show. Most notable, Liz Beebe has stepped aside after a long run as co-lead which made room for Lashon Halley to join the group in 2021 to provide lead female vocals. Also gone are Daniel Mark on mandolin, Connor Vance on violin, and Matthew Rubin on trumpet.

Live Review: The Shins @ The Anthem — 8/19/22

James Mercer of The Shins called upon folk trio Joseph to join his band on stage. The three sisters stepped gently into an accommodating space to his left and began to harmonize through the soothing yet vaguely haunting vocables that launch the live rendition of “New Slang.”

Performing at The Anthem recently, James turned his sharp eyes to the audience and began to strum his guitar. He eased into the lyrics of “New Slang,” which hails from the 2001 debut album of The Shins — Oh, Inverted World. Although the song’s narrator is lost and unhappy, there is something very reassuring in Mercer’s comforting voice and unharrowed stage presence.

Kim Wilson, the face of Austin-based Texas blues outfit The Fabulous Thunderbirds, made his way into the crowd at The Birchmere recently carrying a mic. Kim has spent a lifetime in bars, juke joints, and music halls, and he’s seen and done it all. When he realized the mic wasn’t live, there was only the slightest moment as he made the mental adjustment to sing with his unaided voice, wading through the crowd, placing a hand on a shoulder here and there, connecting with fans, many of whom have followed the band for decades.

At the end of his recent set with The Imposters at Wolf Trap, Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee Elvis Costello was joined by the man he called his hero, Nick Lowe, for the last two songs. Elvis wrote “Indoor Fireworks,” but Lowe was responsible for the show’s last number, “(What’s So Funny ‘Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding).”

Live Review: Roger Waters @ Capital One Arena — 8/16/22

If you describe punk as a movement — a musical way of expressing the frustration of the dispossessed — then Roger Waters, co-founder of Pink Floyd, is punk, and probably more punk rock now than current popular outfits that are self-styled punk rock. And that punk ethos was in display at the Capital One Arena recenlty when Waters and his band brought the This Is Not A Drill Tour to the nation’s capital.

Creating an immersive, in-the-round experience, Roger Waters’ set was both a journey back in time (most of the set included Pink Floyd tunes) and a mirror, reflecting the state of the world we live in, and doing it all in a way only Waters could pull off.

Live Review: Alicia Keys @ Pier Six Pavilion — 8/3/22

One of the most anticipated shows of the past year or two for me was Alicia Keys coming to Baltimore, so after some delays due to the pandemic and hot off the first date of her world tour, I was thrilled when Alicia Keys recently brought the joy and spectacle of her recent double album, Keys, to the Baltimore Pier Six Pavilion.

I can honestly say that I have never seen a show like the one Keys provided this packed crowd along the water of the Inner Harbor.  As the lights went down there appeared a huge circle like a solar eclipse that rose from the back of the stage before changing to brilliant spirals of light as the back of the stage opened, white light pouring out and silhouetting Keys who emerged to massive applause.  Starting off the set with “Nat King Cole.”

As magnetic as they come, COIN drew in fans from all over the region, and melded the crowd with their peachy-sweet, sunshiny discography in their recent concert at The Anthem in DC. Charming the venue in its entirety, the three-man pop rock band, consisting of Chase Lawrence, Ryan Winnen, and Joe Memmel, carried the floor’s energy on their shoulders, delivering the good vibes straight across the pit to the barricade.
