Live Review: Tove Styrke @ The Anthem — 2/24/22

Swedish singer Tove Stryke was conversataional and casual, and she easily chatted with the audience between songs at The Anthem recently.

“I fell in love with my best friend recently,” Tove said, matter of factly, “and I did something I never did before: I wrote her a song.” Tove then sang that song, “Show Me Love,” near the end of a short opening set for Marina during their shared concert performance in DC.

Last year, industrial music pioneer Gary Numan released Intruder, his 21st studio album, via BMG. After canceling the initial plans to tour behind it due to a surge in COVID-19 in the fall, Gary is back on the road, and he arrives in DC to perform at the Lincoln Theatre on Tuesday, March 15!

Singer-songwriter Aoife O’Donovan may have achieved her greatest visibility through her collaborative projects: the bluegrass groups Sometimes Why and Crooked Still, and the all-female Americana supergroup I’m With Her (with Sarah Jarosz and Sara Watkins). She’s been making critically acclaimed Americana records and performing as a solo artist for a decade now, however, and she is a compelling artist in her own right, a gifted writer and a talented performer and interpreter with a beautiful voice and a passion for classic folk songs and great songwriters.

Aoife’s recent appearance at The Kennedy Center was therefore must-see viewing for fans of American and folks music.

Marina may have stepped out onto the stage under the cover of darkness to being her show at The Anthem in DC recently, but she stood with unyielding confidence and conviction as she launched into “Ancient Dreams in a Modern Land” to celebrate the album of the same name. Her smoky voice rang clear over the aggressive beats of the number and she began swing in sway as if to call her words down from the sky and channel them into the audience when the lights came up.

Although she no longer calls herself Marina *and The Diamonds,* she truly sparkled nonetheless.

Blues singer Beth Hart is a survivor. She’s survived a troubled a youth, in which her father, a bail bondsman, did time in prison. Later, her brother passed away due to AIDS. Stardom did not come easily for her; she’s battled mental illness in the form of bipolar disorder and major addictions to drugs and alcohol.

At times, her career has seemed like it might be over, only for her indomitable spirit to persevere, and for Beth’s undeniable talent and passion to bring her back from the musical grave. She was certainly on fire in performance at the Warner Theatre in DC recently.

Even music aimed to comfort the listener can be adventurous and dynamic within that delicate zone, but getting there unquestionably requires a careful and credible impetus.

Sun June, an encouraging indie outfit out of Austin and yet another outstanding member of the Keeled Scales roster, doesn’t loiter purposelessly, but strolls toward bliss in discovering and reconciling the fleeting beauty of one’s own emotions.

Last year, Matador Records released GANG OF FOUR: 77-81, a stunning, limited edition box set curated by Jon King, Hugo Burnham, and Dave Allen gathering Gang of Four’s indelible early work. This followed the death the year previous of Gang of Four’s influential guitarist, Andy Gill.

Gang of Four now reunite to celebrate their legacy with a US tour that includes a stop at Black Cat on Wednesday, March 9.
